Abhi-Ash`s first outing post baby at Deshmukh-Bhagnani wedding

Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza’s wedding was a star studded event, the wedding and the reception of Riteish’s younger brother Dhreeaj was no less!

The youngest Deshmukh tied the knot with producer Vashu Bhagnani’s daughter, Honey on 27th February in Mumbai. And it was just like a recap of Riteish-Genelia’s wedding.

The Bollywood brigade came in full attendance to bless the newly weds at their reception and media went into a frenzy clicking the stars in traditional attires.
B-town’s latest mommy brigade also came out in traditional attires at the wedding reception. Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan made their first public appearance together, post the birth of their baby girl. The couple had also attended Riteish and Genelia’s wedding but had come on separate events. While Abhishek had come for the wedding, Aishwarya had attended the reception along with her in-laws Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.

New mum, actress Lara Dutta also came sans hubby Mahesh Bhupathi. The new mum looked stunning in a Ritu Kumar black saree and smiled for the lenses.

Mommy-to-be Shilpa Shetty came with her husband Raj Kundra. The actress glowed in a orange saree and looked visibly pregnant. The actress’s parents and sister Shamita Shetty were also present at the reception.

Newly weds, Riteish and Genelia were seen welcoming all their friends from the film fraternity and happily posed for the shutterbugs.

Owing to Vashu Bhagnani, Riteish and Genelia, almost the entire film fraternity gathered to celebrate the marriage of two non celebrities.

Other celebrities who were spotted at the reception included Dilip Kumar and Saira Bano, Anupam Kher,Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Dia Mirza with boyfriend Sahil Sangha, Jia Khan, Urmila Matondkar(who looked pristine in a white and pink ensemble), Sanjay Dutt with wife Manyata, Ameesha Patel, Arjun Rampal with Meher Jessia.

Salman Khan also came in for the wedding but was not seen at the reception.

Teenager has been raped by a junior doctor in West Bengal's hospital

A differently-abled teenager has allegedly been raped by a junior doctor at a government hospital in West Bengal's Bankura district, about 150 kms from Kolkata. An FIR has been registered and the girl, who is hearing and speech impaired, is being moved to Kolkata for medical tests.

The clothes of the victim and the bedsheets have also been sent for examination.  Hospital officials say that the family has mistakenly accused the doctor in question of rape. They say he was examining the victim.  Her mother, however, says the 19-year-old girl was found naked and unconscious in the Bankura Sammilani Medical College where she was admitted for chest pains on Monday night.

"They asked me to wait outside and they took her inside. For two hours, they were inside," she explained. "Then I went inside and saw that her clothes were not on her and she was crying. Then I shouted at the doctor, asked him is this how you do treatment?" She added, "She told me everything using sign language."

The hospital's Superintendent, Panchanan Kundu, said a three-member committee has been set up to investigate. "We have received a complaint in this regard. It is learnt that the said doctor examined the patient without being accompanied either by a female hospital staff or a female attendant of the patient. The probe team will look into the allegations," he said.

"They (patients) come here for treatment. We paid for it with my sister's shame," said her brother.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blamed two recent rape cases in her state as political conspiracies. Over the weekend, a woman was allegedly pushed out of a train and gang-raped. Ms Banerjee described that incident as one made up by the opposition Left in the state. She said the alleged victim's husband was a CPM supporter; but he has been dead for several years.  Before that, a woman was raped in a car by men she met at a nightclub on Kolkata's famous Park Street.  Even as the police confirmed that the woman had been sexually assaulted, Ms Banerjee had said the incident was fabricated to malign her government.

US draws up ‘secret charges’ against Assange

In what can be seen as more trouble brewing for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, US prosecutors have drawn up ‘secret charges’ against him, a confidential email quoted by Australian media said.

US-based global intelligence company Stratfor is said to be behind the email.

Sydney Morning Herald has quoted an internal communication between Stratfor analysts and vice-president of intelligence Fred Burton in which Burton said: “We have a sealed indictment on Assange.”

The newspaper also said that the information also had a request ‘to protect it and not publish’, including that the vice-president of intelligence Fred Burton had secure binding with the US intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Julian Assange, the Australian publisher and founder of WikiLeaks, is currently awaiting Britain’s Supreme Court verdict on his appeal against extradition to Sweden on allegations of sexual molestation.

He has denied allegations and claims that they are politically motivated.

Assange's lawyer Jennifer Robinson said, “Irrespective of what happens now we have confirmation that there is a sealed indictment, that we could be seeing an extradition request from the US irrespective of the outcome.”

She also said, “We will not permit, and we will not tolerate Assange’s transfer to the US, to face charges that could potentially land him in prison, potentially for decades."

"It is time the Australian government and the Australian people start asking questions. He is an Australian citizen and he deserves our protection,” she added.

KFA management will meet lenders' consortium by SBI today

Kingfisher Airlines’ (KFA) management will meet their lenders' consortium led by the State Bank of India (SBI) today to convince them to put additional capital in the troubled airline.

SBI, the lead consortium lender to the carrier however told a news channel that KFA would need to arrange fresh equity of Rs 1,000-2,000 crore before seeking additional funds from banks.

Citing Top civil aviation ministry sources, the Channel said that two of Kingfisher ATR aircraft were seized by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and handed over to the leasing company after the lessors complained to the airline regulator.

KFA has been in financial mess and the loans given by banks have turned NPA (non-performing asset) for the past couple of months.

The company's net loss widened to Rs 444.26 crore for the quarter ended December 31, due to high fuel costs and weaker rupee, from Rs 253.69 crore in the October-December quarter of last fiscal.

The airlines suffered a loss of Rs 1,027 crore in 2010-11.

Jayalalithaa-Naveen Patnaik take on Centre over proposed amendment to Railway Protection Force

After the launch of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) was put on hold due to protests by non-Congress ruled states, Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Odisha have trained their guns at the Centre again opposing the proposed amendment to the Railway Protection Force or RPF Act.

Jayalalithaa and Naveen Patnaik joined their Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi in asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to instruct Railway Ministry not to proceed with the move.

They expressed their concern over the move in separate letters to the Prime Minister, alleging that the Centre is trying take away the power of the states.

"I am constrained to point out that the Government of India is bent upon taking one step after another that is in conflict with the federal structure of the country and is against the interest of the people of this nation," Mr Patnaik wrote in his letter to the Prime Minister.

Mr Patnaik's stand has been seconded by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who also wrote to the PM with her protest. Ms Jayalalithaa in her letter said that amendment is an "attempt by the Centre to usurp powers of states."

She asked the PM to drop proposed changes to Railway Force Act, saying "providing powers of police to Railway Police Force (RDF) personnel violates the Police act."

The objections from Ms Jayalalithaa and Mr Patnaik place them indirectly against Mamata Banerjee, since the Railways Ministry is assigned to Dinesh Trivedi of her party.

Mr Patnaik, Ms Jayalalithaa and Ms Banerjee recently headlined a campaign that forced the Centre to suspend its plans for a new anti-terror agency called the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC). Mr Patnaik succeeded in rallying around every chief minister of a non-Congress government together; they said the powers being given to the NCTC encroached upon the rights of states to handle law and order. The NCTC, meant to become operational on March 1, has been put on hold till the Home Ministry concludes consultations with state governments.

Mr Patnaik says that the amendment the Centre is considering to the Railways Act will give police officer-like powers to members of the Railways Protection Force or RPF.

His criticism stresses heavily on the fact that state governments have not been consulted about the proposed amendment. The Railways Ministry is assigned to Dinesh Trivedi of Ms Banerjee's party, the Trinamool Congress.

"It is understood that the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India have already approved the proposal of the Railway Ministry," Mr Patnaik said in his letter.

Stating that the railway tracks were not outside the jurisdiction of the states through which they run, Mr Patnaik said that similar arguments could be advanced by other establishments such as the Central Industrial Security Force, who are in charge of protecting airports, industrial undertakings and other vital installations.

NRHM scam: UP health official found dead

The NRHM scam in Uttar Pradesh has turned murkier with another health official found dead under mysterious circumstances, the fifth victim in the last one year after the alleged bungling of over Rs.10,000 crore of central funds surfaced.

UP police found the body of Mahendra Sharma, an accountant, lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries on his head and face, from the Pasgawan health centre area in Lakhimpur Kheri district last evening.

52-year-old Sharma has been reported missing since February 7, police said.

The CBI, which is probing the scam, has asked the state police to beef up security of witnesses and suspects.

In 2010-11, two senior doctors associated with the health department were murdered within months of each other. Another official was found dead in a Lucknow jail. In January, a UP Jal Nigam officer allegedly committed suicide because he was being investigated in connection with the scam.

As the news of Sharma's death spread, Congress and BJP slammed the Mayawati government, accusing it of actively colluding in the "massive bungling".

Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi accused the Mayawati government of misuse of funds meant for improvement of health facilities in the state.

BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad said, "the larger issue is the liability of Mayawati herself as the chief minister and the earlier regime of Mulayam Singh Yadav because the entire scam was spread over last about 7-8 years."

Family members of the accountant have accused health department officials of harassment.

Mithilesh Sharma, the wife of the deceased, said that frequent transfers of her husband had depressed him. She also accused health officials of withholding his salary.

Mithilesh alleged that after solemnising their daughter's marriage on November 21 last, when Sharma reported for duty in Pasgawan, he was told about his another transfer.

Meanhwile, the CBI in New Delhi denied having questioned Sharma in connection with the probe.

"CBI has neither questioned nor summoned this person. CBI is in close touch with local police regarding safety concerns of potential witnesses, suspects, etc," a CBI spokesperson said here.

End to Norway kids row: Uncle to get the custody

In a major diplomatic win for India, the Norwegian Child Welfare Service (CWS) on Tuesday decided to award custody of the two children, one-year-old Aishwarya and three-year-old Abhigyan of the NRI couple Sagarika and Anurup Bhattacharya , to their uncle.

"This week, the CWS in Stavanger completed its talks with the uncle in the child welfare case concerning two Indian children. It has been concluded that care of the two children should be awarded to the brother of the children’s father enabling him to take the children back to India," CWS said in a press statement.

The development will enable the NRI couple to bring their children back to India.

The proposed solution will be presented on March 23, the provisional date for the hearing, to Stavanger District Court, which will take the final decision in the case.

This arrangement requires, however, that the Child Welfare Service ensures that the necessary legal framework and follow-up procedures are in place in order to safeguard the children’s best interests and enable the uncle to deal with the situation in the best possible way, CWS said.

Abhigyan and Aishwarya were taken away by Barnevarne Norwegian CWS last May on the ground of "emotional disconnect" and put in a foster home.

Ministry of External Affairs has been making huge efforts to impress upon the Norwegian authorities to find an amicable and urgent solution to the row with Minister SM Krishna assuring that the children would be brought home at "any cost".

The decision taken by the CWS has come as a big relief to the NRI couple.

“This is the greatest moment of our life,” Anurup told reporters.

However Anurup added that the kids will only be able to come back to India by March end but still they have not got any official information.

While thanking the Indian envoys meet, Anurup said “the meet has brought out this positive outcome.”

Earlier in the day the family members had lodged in a foster home in Norway and met External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, who had assured them that the children would be brought home at any cost.

Bhopal architect got Shehla Masood killed, CBI arrested

In a major breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a Bhopal-based architect Zahida Pervez in connection with the murder of RTI activist Shehla Masood in August last year.

Pervez is presently in the CBI custody and is believed to have informed the investigators that she had some personal rivalry with the RTI activist.

Pervez had also confessed before the CBI officials that she had hired a contract killer to get Masood eliminated. However, the person who allegedly shot at the RTI activist was later killed in Kanpur.

The investigations into the murder of the RTI activist was finally transferred to the Delhi branch of the CBI. Prior to that, the murder was being looked into by the Bhopal unit of the central probe agency.

The decision to hand over the case to CBI Delhi office was taken in view of the fact that not much headway was made into the investigations in the case.

The Bhopal Unit of the CBI had begun investigations into the killing on September six.

The Bhopal unit had even announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for anyone giving information leading to the arrest of the assailant(s).

The 32-year-old activist was shot dead in broad daylight in front of her house on August 16 last year, while she was leaving for a campaign of India Against Corruption (IAC). She had, earlier, alleged that she was getting threatening calls.

Shehla was working on several issues including good governance, police reforms, environment, tiger protection, transparency and RTI Act.

The case was given to the CBI three weeks after she was murdered.

US: Having very intense conversations with India, China on Iranian oil

The United States is having "very intense and very blunt" conversations with India, China and Turkey on reducing their dependence on Iranian oil, secretary of state Hillary Clinton has told lawmakers.

Clinton, testifying before a congressional committee on Tuesday, said the US is asking these countries to take specific measures that would reduce their dependence on Iranian oil adding. But, without naming one, she did acknowledge that this would be a bit tough for some countries.

"With respect to China and Turkey and India, we've had very intense and very blunt conversations with each of those countries. I think that there are a number of steps that we are pointing out to them that we believe they can and should make," Clinton said while responding to questions from Senator Robert Menendez.

"In a number of cases, both on their government side and on their business side, they are taking actions that go further and deeper than perhaps their public statements might lead you to believe," Clinton said.

"We are going to continue to keep an absolute foot on the pedal in terms of our accelerated, aggressive outreach to them. And they are looking for ways to make up the lost revenues, the lost crude oil," she said.

Claiming that oil deficit is a difficulty for several other countries, Clinton said US has come up with lots of suggestions that would help these countries in resolving the crisis.

"Our expectation and the direction we are giving to countries is that we do expect to see significant reductions. I am pleased to report, Senator, that we've been aggressively reaching out to and working with countries to assist them in being able to make such significant reductions," Clinton said.

Earlier in the day, testifying before the state, foreign operations and related programs subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Clinton told Senators the US is aggressively pursuing sanctions against Iran.

"We are implementing the new Iran sanctions aggressively. The (US) president issued an executive order on February 6th that blocks assets under US jurisdiction of all Iranian banks; also makes it clear that both the departments of treasury and state are expected to enforce the sanctions absolutely," she said.

"We have been travelling the world, high-level teams from treasury, energy and state, to explain what the sanctions are to counterparts around the world. We're very frank in these discussions about the requirements of US law," the US leader said.

Meanwhile, a broad range of countries are making decisions to reduce their dependence on Iranian crude, unwind their dealings with the central bank of Iran, she said.

"We are also pushing very hard to make it clear that we'll help countries that have a significant dependence on Iranian crude to try to find alternatives. It is something that they have to look for. They can't just stop cold turkey and not have anything fuelling their economies," Clinton said.

While referring to the steps being taken by the European Union and Japan, the secretary of state said that some of the major oil producers have set forth their willingness to try to make up the difference.

"We've seen increasing difficulty by Iran in importing and exporting products. They cannot purchase third-party liability coverage for their vessels. So we've stopped them from being insured, which means they can't travel," she said.

Clinton added that the Japan, which lost much of their electricity production because of the earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown, had reduced their imports from Iran in the range of 15 to 20 per cent since last year and is looking for new suppliers.

Govt to tighten noose on corrupt officials

Corrupt public officials beware! Government officials found taking bribes might have to face 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, while big spenders would have to voluntarily report high-value transactions; as per the recommendations of a panel on black money.

As per a newspaper report, the measures are part of the Black Money Committee Report. The Committee, constituted to examine ways to strengthen laws to curb the generation of black money in the country, its illegal transfer abroad and its recovery submitted its report on January 31.

The Centre has issued new guidelines to seize properties or money of government officials involved in corrupt practices even after their retirement. Moreover the government may buy out the property if it finds that the deal is undervalued and aimed at avoiding tax.

The Hindustan Times further reports that if someone is buying bullion or jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh, it has to be brought to the notice of the tax authorities.

Government in its bid to crack down on black money has also planned to make it mandatory for all overseas transactions to be reported to the income tax department.

Hobart exploits leave selectors in a tricky situation

Indian team’s redemption at Hobart against Sri Lanka on Tuesday may have come as a respite for its under fire cricketers but it has left the selectors in a dilemma.

When selectors meet to choose the squad for Asia Cup on Wednesday beginning from March 12 in Bangladesh, the foremost thing in their mind would be to decide whether or not to tinker with the winning combination.

The top order that boasts of names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag has failed to give a substantial start in the current tri-series barring Tuesday’s clash against Lanka.

MS Dhoni who has continued playing non-stop cricket since India’sWorld Cup triumph last year, might also be rested for the four-nation continental championships to be held in Dhaka.

India are the defending champions and five-time winners of the trophy and a huge alteration in the composition of the squad is unlikely.

But there are going to be changes after the consecutive flop show in England and Australia by the World Cup-winning team.

There are some injury worries too, notably to R Vinay Kumar and Irfan Pathan.

Kumar sat out the team`s penultimate league game against Australia and also missed the last game against Srilanka at Hobart, while Pathan, who collided on the field with Suresh Raina at Sydney, was not fit enough to take the field in their final round-robin match against the Lankans.

The selectors might also take into note the domestic performances when they put on their thinking hats.

Irfan`s brother Yusuf, who has started playing after getting injured in the earlier part of the season, has shown how much of a game-changer he could be when conditions suit his style of batting in the sub-continent by blasting his way to a century against Saurashtra two days ago with the help of 10 sixes and six fours.

With Jadeja being out of sorts and Test specialist Pragyan Ojha also not among the thick of wickets in the one-day domestic event, Yusuf is very likely to be recalled to the squad for his all round abilities as a powerful hitter lower down the order and an economical off-break bowler.

Also in the selectors` radar could be Robin Uthappa, another big-hitting batsman, who is third in the top scorers` list in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 292 runs, including a belligerent century.

The selectors will certainly have to take tough decisions dropping underperforming players and giving a chance to youngsters while also resting overworked skipper Dhoni.

Italian FM says: Fishermen row: Will cooperate,

Amid diplomatic tensions between the two countries over the killing of two fishermen off Kollam coast, Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Maria Terzi di Sant' Agata met his Indian counterpart SM Krishna on Tuesday and said his country will push the matter in a friendly manner.

Flanked by Krishna, Agata said “I convey the condolences of Italian people on the killing of two Indian fishermen.”

“The position of the Italian government on the issue is our government wants to go by international law. The Indian government, however, wants to go by the Indian law. So there is a difference of opinion,” he said addressing a joint press conference. “We will continue to pursue the matter in a friendly spirit, understanding and cooperation”, he added.

As per reports, Italy may offer compensation to the families of the victims.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishan said, “India needs to consider the public opinion on the fishermen issue.” He added, “India’s relationship with Italy is strong.”

The Italian FM arrived in New Delhi with the families of the two guards of Italian vessel Enrica Lexie who allegedly fired at the Kerala fishermen. Italy has been maintaining that the incident occurred outside Indian territorial waters and the marines’ action was taken assuming the fishing vessel to be carrying pirates.

Inspite of the pressure mounted by Italy, India had steadfastly maintained that the trial of the two Italians will be held in India.

Earlier in the day, the Italian FM met Commerce Minister Anand Sharma but it was mainly regarding trade and economic issues between the two countries.

Two fishermen, Ajesh Binki, 25, from Tamil Nadu and Gelastine, 45, from Kerala, were mistaken as pirates and shot dead by the crew of the Italian cargo vessel on February 15, about 14 nautical miles off Alappuzha.

Earlier the Italian Ambassador Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte was summoned by Ministry of External Affairs by Secretary (West) M Ganapathi regarding the issue. Defence Minister AK Antony had also described the incident as "serious and unfortunate".

The Indian Navy has also maintained that the Italian merchant vessel had violated the established anti-piracy norms when it fired at an Indian boat carrying 11 fishermen killing two of them. Whenever there is a piracy attempt on a merchant vessel, it is supposed to communicate to its base or nearest ship but no such communication was registered from the Italian ship in this incident, as per the Navy.

As per the norms, any ship coming under attack has to report the incident immediately to the single primary point of contact which is the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) in Dubai.

The ships are also supposed to make 'Mayday' distress calls on particular radio frequencies watched by the navies but no such attempt seems to have been made by the vessel.

In case of an attack, merchant vessels are first required to adopt evasive measures and if such a measure does not help, they are supposed to fire warning shorts in air first.

Indian actress Freida Pinto strips for sexiest photoshoot ever

Since catapulting to fame with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ four years ago, Freida Pinto is lauded as one of the best dressed and often features on the ‘most beautiful women in the world’ lists.

But in a glossy new photoshoot, the 27-year-old Indian actress has revealed her rarely seen sexy side as she posed suggestively in a vest and panties for the April issue of men’s magazine ‘Esquire’.

Pinto talks frankly about her nude scenes in her latest film Trishna - an Indian-set reworking of Tess Of The d’Urbervilles - in a raunchy new interview.

She briefly appears naked in a sex scene in the Michael Winterbottom-directed film, but recently admitted she enlisted a butt double for the sequence.

“It was hard but it was a small crew, and they were good at not making their presence felt,” the Daily Mail quoted her as telling Esquire magazine.

“They didn’t go, “Quick! She’s nearly naked! Get your camera out!” she said.

And although the Indian actress did strip off for this film, nude scenes wouldn’t become a regular occurrence, as she insists that the script would have to justify them.

“If you’re just doing a nude scene in order for everyone to, like, w*** off or something, then that’s not my thing at all,” she added.

Team Anna member Kejriwal does not vote, Cong takes a dig

Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal has been embroiled in yet another controversy. This time it had to do with his reluctance to vote in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on Tuesday. Nonetheless, he was forced to retract after a hullaballoo in the media.

Kejriwal was reportedly heading to Goa for a Team Anna meet without casting his vite. But after the media picked up the story he came back to Ghaziabad to cast his vote, only to find that his name was not in the voters list.

Later Kejriwal said that he had the voters’ card and that he had returned to vote as he had ‘realised his mistake’. "I was feeling guilty when I was leaving for Goa."

This goof-up by the anti-corruption crusader gave a chance to his detractors to take a dig at him. Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh promptly tweeted, “If they do believe in democracy then what form of democracy.” “Obviously Team Anna doesn't practice what it preaches. They should clarify whether they believe in democracy or not,” he added. Further rubbing it in, he tweeted, “Great protectors of probity in public life. Anna doesn't go to vote. Kejriwal doesn't care to see whether he is registered as voter.”

Arvind Kejriwal was involved in another controversy recently when on February 25 he had termed Parliamentarians as 'robbers' and 'rapists'. This remark had sparked off a huge controversy with the entire political class coming down heavily on the social activist.

Also in what seems ironical now, Anna Hazare had met Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi just a few days back and pressed the poll panel to consider implementing the measures suggested by the civil society in the proposed electoral reform process.

Anna was accompanied by Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi.

The meeting was held in the backdrop of Quraishi’s rejection of Team Anna’s two main demands of incorporating ‘right to recall’ and ‘right to reject’ in the proposed electoral reform process.

The poll panel chief was of the opinion that the 'right to reject' or the 'right to recall' non-performing MPs may not work in a large country like India.

Scientists see red over cuts to NASA Mars missions

NASA has said it is not giving up on Mars, but it will have to get there later and at a lower price.

President Barack Obama's announced this month budget cancelled joint US-European robotic missions to Mars in 2016 and 2018. Now top science officials say they are scrambling to come up with a plan by the end of the summer for a cut-rate journey to the red planet in 2018.

NASA sciences chief John Grunsfeld said he thinks there is a better than even chance that NASA will not miss the 2018 opportunity. That is when Mars passes closest to Earth, which happens only once every 15 years. It offers a chance at fuel cost-savings and the ability to send up more equipment.

Agency officials who met with upset scientists yesterday seemed intent on salvaging a programme that took some of the deepest science spending hits in the president's budget. Until this month, NASA had been ramping up its Martian ambitions.

Meanwhile, in the middle of this year, the most high-tech rover ever, Curiosity, will land near the Martian equator in search of the chemical building blocks of life. The more scientists study Mars, the closer they get to answering whether microbial life once existed there, a clue to the ultimate question: Are we alone?

Two years ago, President Barack Obama stood at Kennedy Space Center and said it was more of a priority than going to the moon. He wanted astronauts there by the mid-2030s.

But the two coming missions were then cancelled along with the most ambitious Mars flight yet planned, which the National Academy of Sciences endorsed as the No. 1 solar system priority. That was a plan to grab Martian rocks and soil and bring them back to Earth. Now that is "not an option" given the current budget, Grunsfeld said.

Mars researcher Steve Squyres of Cornell University, who headed the national academy panel, said if NASA could not make progress on a Mars sample return, the space agency should think about moving on to the next priorities, such as visiting Jupiter's moon Europa.

"We're really at a crossroads," NASA planetary sciences chief Jim Green said.

NASA said it does not quite know what a reconfigured 2018 mission would look like, but it would be cost-capped at USD 700 million and it will not be landing. If it is lucky, it may orbit Mars.

After Curiosity lands in August, the next NASA Mars surface mission probably is close to a decade away, Grunsfeld said.

To scientists, the message from the White House seems simple: Bye-bye, Mars.

If Obama's budget sails through as outlined, "in essence, it is the end of the Mars programme," said Phil Christensen, a Mars researcher at Arizona State University. It is like "we've just flown Apollo 10 and now we're going to cancel the Apollo programme when we're one step from landing," he said.

The end of Salman’s love life!

Dating girls and Salman Khan are believed to be synonymous with each other. The actor has been associated with a long list of beauties in the past, and very recently has fuelled rumours of getting back with his ex-flame Katrina Kaif. However, the actor feels that his dating days have come to an end now.

In an in-depth talk with the media during the launch of a new show, Sallu stunned his audience by saying that he somehow no longer remembers the art of dating girls now. At the age of 46, even though the general observation might seem contradictory, Salman has said that he is no longer adept at dating women. The actor said to a leading daily that he was once very lucky at dating girls, but that is a thing of the past.

Salman’s ‘most eligible bachelor of Bollywood’ tag is something that the actor is not too ready to shed by entering into holy matrimony, it seems. What with three epic break-ups in his past, that with actresses Somy Ali, Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif, looks like Salman is tired of dating girls now. While ex Katrina has decided to go ahead with an arranged marriage later in life, Salman too seems to be in the same court.

Love or no love, you will still rule the roost when it comes to dating girls, Salman. And we sincerely wish that you retain that status, forever and beyond!

SC pulls up Centre for shifting stand on homosexuality issue

The central government on Today changed its stand on homosexuality issue in the Supreme Court, saying there is no error in decriminalising gay sex.

The SC pulled up the central government for shifting its stand on homosexuality.

"Don't make mockery of the system and don't waste court's time," the Supreme Court told the Union government.

The Centre suffered a huge embarrassment in the Supreme Court on Feb 23 when its counsel termed homosexuality as immoral, disregarding the decision of the Union Cabinet not to oppose the Delhi high court's verdict on Section 377 of Indian Penal Code decriminalizing consensual sex among gay adults.

Appearing in the hearing on a petition challenging the HC order which decriminalized Section 377 and was celebrated as a major triumph by gay activists and liberal advocacy groups, additional solicitor general P P Malhotra launched into a sharp attack on homosexuality, calling it immoral.

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy won Pakistan's first Oscar

The documentary that won Pakistan's first Oscar is a matter of national pride, but its "content is a matter of national shame", said a daily.

The Oscar that went to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy in Los Angeles is a first for Pakistan. Chinoy, who dedicated the award to the women of Pakistan, has been internationally recognised in the past.

An editorial in the News International on Today said the subjects of her work are often challenging and "her winning documentary is certainly so".

"'Saving face' documents the fate of women attacked by having acid thrown on them and the work of a British-Pakistani surgeon who performs reconstructive surgery on their appallingly scarred faces," it said.

The editorial said: "Over 100, mainly women and girls, are attacked in this way every year, though civil society groups say the real figure is much higher but many victims and their families choose not to report the crime out of fear or 'shame'."

It, however, added that although the award is a matter of personal and national pride, "its content is a matter of national shame".

"Pakistan is reportedly the third-most dangerous country in the world for women after Afghanistan and Congo..."

Chinoy made the film about acid attacks, and "in doing so drew back the curtain and exposed this form of misogyny".

Govt to set up internet scanning agency called NCCC

The government is setting up an internet scanning agency which will seek to monitor all web traffic passing through internet service providers in the country. The scanning agency to be called National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC), will issue 'actionable alerts' to government departments in cases of perceived security threats.

The move comes as the government has been unable to prevent many terror attacks, in the absence of a credible internet scanning system.

According to the minutes of ameeting held on February 3, 2012, at the National Security Council Secretariat under the PMO, the National Cyber Coordination Centre will 'scan whole cyber traffic flowing at the point of entry and exit at India's international internet gateways'. The web scanning centre will provide 'actionable alerts for proactive actions' to be taken by government departments.

All government departments will now talk to the Internet Service Providers such as Bharti Airtel, RCOM, BSNL, MTNL and Tata Communications through NCCC for real time information and data on threats.

According to sources, government is planning to invest about .`800 crore in the setup. "The coordination centre will be the first layer of threat monitoring in the country. It would always be in virtual contact with the control room of the Internet Service Providers," the Deputy National Security Advisor Vijay Latha Reddy said, as per minutes of the meeting.

The government is collating manpower requirements for the centre currently. "At present, the monitoring of web traffic is done by Centre for Development of Telematics ( C-DoT) which has installed its equipments at the premises of ISPs and gateways," informs Rajesh Chharia, president at Association of Internet Service Providers.

All tweets, messages, emails, status updates and even email drafts will now pass through the new scanning centre. The centre may probe further into any email or social media account if it finds a perceived threat.

India's National Security Council Secretariat (NCSC) has asked various departments to assess their needs for officials, who will coordinate with the scanning agency. The National Security Council handles the political, nuclear, energy and strategic security concerns of the country.

As per the minutes seen by ET, Defence Research and Development Organisation officials were of the view that there is no perfect system.

Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine' based on Manisha Koirala's life

Manisha Koirala, the Nepali beauty who shot to dizzying heights of stardom in the 90s, saw it spiralling down by mid-2005 because of her alcohol abuse and lack of self-esteem.

Her life was almost an open book because she was often spotted in a drunken stupor in public and also went through some tumultuous relationships that got a lot of media attention.

Now, reliable sources say that Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine', starring Kareena Kapoor, is reportedly inspired by the ups and downs in Manisha's personal and professional life.

Madhur, however, denies drawing inspiration from Manisha's life. "No, my film is not based on anyone in particular."

The National Award-winning filmmaker known for borrowing heavily from real life says, "I've been asked whether it is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe and many others. 'Heroine' takes nothing out of any particular actor's life."

WB CM Mamta Banerjee appealed to the masses against strike

Apologising for calling strikes and shutdowns during her days as an opposition leader, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday appealed to the masses to foil the industrial strike called on Feb 28 and assured that the government would take stringent action against those who tried to implement the strike forcefully.

"We (Trinamool Congress) had earlier done the same mistake by calling for strikes and shutdowns. We later realised that a problem cannot be solved by calling a strike. In the last two years, we have not called a single strike," said Banerjee in an interview that was telecast on three Bengali news channels.

"We committed a mistake and have rectified it. We think the people have forgiven us for our mistake. I appeal to the masses of my state not to respond to this strike. A strike will rob daily labourers of their earnings," said Banerjee.

While assuring the masses that the government had taken necessary steps to keep trains, trams and buses running, Banerjee accused the Left parties of calling the strike in order to prove their political mettle.

"If any government staff takes part in the strike, then the government will take steps. All government employees should attend their respective offices. The former Left Front government used to help in making the strike a success. But we will not do it," said Banerjee.

The government has also issued circulars barring government employees from taking leave on the day of the strike.

Eleven central trade unions, including INTUC, BMS, CITU, AITUC, UTUC, AIUTUC, HMS, TUCI and NLO will participate in the Feb 28 general shut-down, demanding steps for controlling the rise in prices of essential commodities and creation of more employment opportunities.

"This politics of shutdown and strikes have crippled the state for the last 35 years. When I am trying to usher development for the state, the opposition is trying to create problem," she said.

"If the pro-strike protestors try to implement the strike forcefully then the government will act accordingly in order to keep everything normal. Nobody should force the common people to participate in the strike," said Banerjee.

Kareena may replace Malaika as the new Munni in Dabangg 2

If the buzz is to be believed, Kareena Kapoor will be doing an item number in Dabangg 2.

The sequel of Dabangg is getting bigger by the day. If the buzz is to be believed, Kareena Kapoor will be replacing Malaika Arora Khan from the original for an item number in Dabangg 2.

Apparently the makers want to have another item number in the sequel and having Kareena Kapoor would only make it bigger. Malaika Arora Khan, in most probability, would be restricted to only being the producer. When the Dabangg sequel was newly announced, post the success of the original, there were multiple speculations including one that said Amrita Arora would join Malaika Arora for the item song in sequel. Together the sisters would dance with Salman Khan. However the only thing that would be common to the sequel's item number seems to be Salman Khan.

Industry insiders insist that the Salman Khan - Kareena Kapoor pairing in Bodyguard was much-liked and so the actress was the right choice. Also Kareena Kapoor hasn't done an item song since Don. So there would be fresh appeal to the item number. Either of the composers from the original, Lalit Pandit or Sajid-Wajid would be composing the song.

Dabangg 2 is expected to go on floors in early March.

UP polls: Voting starts on dull note, 10 percent polling till 9 AM

Polling for the sixth phase of UP assembly elections covering 68 seats spread over 13 districts started on a dull note today with about 10 per cent of the over 2.17 crore voters exercising their franchise in the first two hours.

"Polling started at 7 AM and 9.73 per cent votes were polled in the first two hours," Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said.

Maximum 14 per cent votes were polled in Hathras district. Among other districts, 11.7 per cent votes were polled in Saharanpur, 10 per cent in Meerut, 10.7 per cent in Agra, 11.71 per cent in Aligarh, 9.2 per cent in Bulandshahr and 9 per cent in Prabuddha Nagar.

Polling in Noida, Dadri and Jewar assembly seats in Gautam Budhh Nagar was going on peacefully.

In Bhatta Parsaul, which was the centre of the land acquisition row, farmers were seen coming out to vote.

Their leader Manvir Singh Tevatia, who had spearheaded the farmers' agitation, was fighting election from jail. The area falls under Jewar Assembly seat. Congress has fielded Dhirendra Singh from Jewar. He was the man on whose bike Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi had reached Bhatta Parsaul last year.

In Chief Minister Mayawati's native Badalpur village, farmers had lined up to cast their vote. BSP has fielded Satvir Gujjar sitting MLA from here while Congress has fielded Samir Bhatti.

Bhatti had once served as MLA from Dadri and his father Mahinder Singh Bhatti was twice MLA from here.BJP has fielded Nawab Singh Nagar, who was twice elected MLA from here in the past. Samajwadi Party has fielded Raj Kumar Bhatti as candidate.

In Noida, which has become an assembly seat for the first time, residents seemed enthusiastic. Earlier Noida was part of Dadri assembly seat and rural voters used to decide the winning pattern here.

Mahesh Sharma is BJP candidate from Noida while VS Chauhan is Congress candidate. Om Dutt Sharma is BSP candidate while Sunil Choudhary is the SP candidate.

Polling is underway in assembly seats in Saharanpur, Prabuddha Nagar, Meerut, Bagpath, Ghaziabad, Panchsheel Nagar, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Muzaffarnagar, Mathura, Mahamayanagar and Agra.

More than 2.17 crore voters are expected to cast their votes to decide the fate of 1103 candidates, including 86 women.

The CEO said that polling was being held at 22,137 polling stations at 12181 centres, of which 3188 centres and 4892 stations have been marked as sensitive.

To keep a tight vigil on polling process, 1015 video cameras and 2353 digital cameras have been installed. In the 2007 assembly polls, 46.58 per cent votes were polled for 67 seats of which BSP got 35, BJP 12, RLD 10, SP 3, Congress 2 and others 5.

All the political parties including Congress, SP, BSP, BJP and RLD have done hectic campaigning in the Jat land of the state.

This phase would test the popularity of Congress' alliance with Ajit Singh led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) which has stronghold in the western region of the state.

US-based Stratfor spied on Bhopal activists for Dow Chemicals

US-based security think-tank Stratfor spied for the Dow Chemicals on the activists of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, WikiLeaks alleged on Monday as the whistleblower website started publishing millions of confidential emails of this prominent private intelligence analyst group.

The e-mails date between July 2004 and late December 2011, WikiLeaks said.

"They reveal the inner workings of a company that fronts as an intelligence publisher, but provides confidential intelligence services to large corporations, such as Bhopal's Dow Chemical Co, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and government agencies, including the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Marines and the US Defence Intelligence Agency," WikiLeaks alleged.

Stratfor was not immediately available for its reaction on the allegations by WikiLeaks. But the website of this Texas-based organisation said that it is offering all its contents for free.

"I wanted to warn you that individuals continue to send out false communications that appear to be from Stratfor.

These spam emails may contain malware and attachments, and may attempt to lead you to websites that look like our own. They may also attempt to convince you to provide your private information," says Stratfor CEO George Friedman on its website.

The emails posted by WikiLeaks on its website, revealed that Stratfor not only provided to Dow Chemicals and Union Carbide the analysis of the daily developments on the case related to the Bhopal Gas tragedy in Indian courts, but also the activities including the travel plans and like where they are staying or what they plan to do.

Media has not been able to independently verify the authenticity of these emails.

The correspondence also contains code names for people of particular interest such as 'Hizzies' (members of Hezbollah), or 'Adogg' (Mahmoud Ahmedinejad), WikiLeaks alleged.

The whistleblower website said that Stratfor did secret deals with dozens of media organisations and journalists.

WikiLeaks, claimed, to have also obtained Stratfor's list of informants and, in many cases, records of its payoffs, including USD 1,200 a month paid to the informant "Geronimo" , handled by Stratfor's Former State Department agent Fred Burton.

WikiLeaks has built an investigative partnership with more than 25 media organisations, including The Hindu from India. The organisations were provided access to a sophisticated investigative database developed by WikiLeaks and together with WikiLeaks are conducting journalistic evaluations of these emails.

Supreme Court of Pakistan to resume contempt case against Gilani

A seven-member bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan will resume on Today to hear the contempt of court case against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Gilani's counsel Aitzaz Ahsan submitted a reply in the apex court in the contempt case yesterday.

The counsel moved an application seeking the summoning of three witnesses as court witnesses in the interest of a fair trial.

Ahsan filed his application under various government rules read with sections of the Criminal Procedure Code for summoning of witnesses and documents.

He said the apex court should call former Law Minister Babar Awan, Law Secretary Masood Chishti and Cabinet Secretary Nargis Sethi to appear as the court's witnesses.

He also asked the court to obtain certified copies of certain documents that would be furnished as evidence in support of Gilani.

Ahsan said Gilani did not want to ask the former minister and the two secretaries to appear in court in his official capacity as this could be perceived as "exertion of undue influence".

The Supreme Court recently rejected Gilani's appeal and indicted him for contempt of court after he refused to act on orders to reopen cases of alleged money laundering against President Asif Ali Zardari in Switzerland.

However, Gilani is not required to personally appear during today's hearing.

Ahsan further said Gilani's defence rested mainly on official government proposals presented to him last year that contained the opinions of officials on the issue of reopening the cases against the President.

Referring to the production of witnesses by the prosecution, Ahsan said that it would have been fair to the defence if it had been given an opportunity to cross-examine these witnesses.

The apex court has been pressuring the government to revive the cases against Zardari since December 2009, when it struck down the National Reconciliation Ordinance, a graft amnesty issued by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

The government has refused to act, saying the President enjoys complete immunity from prosecution within Pakistan and abroad.

Match in Hobart 2012: India Vs Sri Lanka live score

21.5: 50 up for Dilshan. It is his second of the series and came with a boundary off Ashwin. With this the Sri Lankan score crossed 100-run mark.

Scorecard: India V Sri Lanka»

Live Commentary»

12.4: 50 up for Sri Lanka.

Over 12: Out! Jadeja removed Mahela Jayawardene.

Mahela (22) tried playing a late cut but somehow forgot there was a slip. He ended up gifting his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja as Virender Sehwag took a nice catch. Score: 49/1

Over 11: First bowling change for India. Umesh Yadav introduced into the attack.

Over 4.5: First six of the day. Mahela Jayawardene again skipped down the track playing a controlled shot over long-on boundary for a six.

Over 2.2: First boundary of the day. Mahela Jayawardene charged down the track dispatching Zaheer Khan over mid-on for a boundary.

Over 1: Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene took guard for Sri Lanka as Zaheer Khan opened up bowling for India.

India won the toss and elected to field first on Today.

India take on Sri Lanka in their last league match on Today with a difficult task of defeating them with a bonus point. Not only this, they will have to pray--if they manage to secure win--that Australia also defeat the Lankan team that will give India any hope of making it to the finals of the CB series.

Given India`s current form, it looks like a tall ask since none of their batsmen has been a source of assurance even as their bowling and fielding has put up a better show. The uncertain top order gives way to a middle order that surrenders unexpectedly when the things are under control.

The team will have to produce their best performance hoping all their departments fire in unison unlike as has been the case so far in the tri-series.

On the other hand Sri Lanka have been a contrast to India improving with each match as their bowlers and batsmen have performed at crucial times complementing each other’s effort. For Sri Lanka, they can play safe and still be assured of a place in the finals.

Indian team has dropped Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan comes into the side.

Seven bank unions, trade unions call for mega strike today

As many as seven employees' unions of banks, 11 central trade unions and 5,000 smaller unions have given a call for strike on Today.

The striking trade unions include the Left labour arms CITU, AITUC, UTUC and AIUTUC, and Congress' INTUC, besides BMS, HMS, TUCI and NLO who have joined forces in support of a 10-point charter of demands including protest against rising prices, disinvestment of profit-making PSUs and violation of labour.

As per reports, senior union leaders have said that the strike will be near-total in Assam, Kerala, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.

Around 8 lakh bank employees will protest against outsourcing of non-core activities to the private sector, stringent measures to recover bad loans.

"Seven bank unions of nine have given strike call for stringent and effective measures to recover bad loans of banks and unilateral imposition of Khandelwal committee recommendations," All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) General Secretary CH Venkatachalam told.
.
There are about 87,000 branches of public sector banks across the country. The state-owned lenders control about 75 per cent of banking business. Meanwhile, many banks including, SBI, Corporation Bank, State Bank of Mysore have said that if the proposed strike materialises, normal services may have to be curtailed. The Centre-appointed Khandelwal panel had suggested a slew of measures, including outsourcing more and more non-core activities in a time-bound manner.

The panel had also recommended raising the standard of recruitment, including the methodology and content for tests, besides making the testing of computer skills mandatory for both officers and clerks. The Khandelwal committee on human resources had also suggested that the minimum qualification for clerks and sub-staff should be graduation and class 10, respectively.

Vidya Balan plans `dirty dancing`

Bollywood star Vidya Balan wants to improve her vocabulary, on the one hand, to express her feelings towards the success of ‘The Dirty Picture’. On the other, she is looking forward to a break and says post that she will do some "dirty dancing".

After working non-stop for more than two years, she now wants to take a break.

"I am close to saying yes to a film which will not start for another three months. So I really think I need that break because for the past two-and-a-half-years I have been busy with my films. So now I do need that time off to soak everything in. Then I will probably do some dirty dancing," the 33-year-old talented actor told reporters.

An unofficial biopic of southern sex siren Silk Smitha, ‘The Dirty Picture’ saw Vidya shedding all inhibitions to get under the skin of the character and said: "I have become unapologetic about being myself. Probably others think that I don`t breathe the same air (laughs). I just take that as a compliment, but I have a long way to go but yes god has been kind."

"I was hoping the film would do well, but I had no idea that the film would do so well. I feel blessed and I am looking for new words for blessed, humbled and overwhelmed."

Unwilling to get typecast or repeat same roles, Vidya will soon be seen stepping out of the sex icon image by playing a pregnant woman in director Sujoy Ghosh`s ‘Kahaani’, a thriller that will show what all her character goes through when she flies down to Kolkata to find her missing husband.

"I can`t do the same thing again and again. When I am getting variety, then why will I not take that advantage? This woman (in `Kahaani`) is a vulnerable woman who is searching for her husband, but she has not lost her sense of humour. She is a woman of today."

Vidya has been extremely choosy with scripts, but clarifies that it doesn`t mean she is narrowing down her options.

"The proposition of success has been humongous, thankfully. But even after `Paa`, `Ishqiya` and `No One Killed Jessica`, people said what next? Are your options narrowing down? I don`t think about these things. If god has brought me so far, he will take me further.

"I am here to act. I am not saying I will do only solo heroine projects or like that. I want to do different genres of films," she said.

Ghosh was shouldering the burden of two flops – ‘Aladin’ and ‘Home Delivery’ - when he approached Vidya, but she was not sceptical about the director and took the plunge.

"When Balki came to me with `Paa`, I had a `Kismat Konnection` and `Heyy Babyy` behind me. And when Sujoy came to me, my films were doing well. But he is an intelligent man he is one of the most intelligent men I have met. Two of his films didn`t work, but he has put things together this time around. I am hoping it will work out. But I think the intention is right," she said.

AR Rahman to perform at Oscars 2012

Music maestro AR Rahman, who had performed at the Academy awards last year, returned to the prestigious ceremony to lend music to the Oscars show.

"Oscar sangamam - If you are watching the Oscars live, catch our Oscar super band headed by Hans Zimmer perform tonight," Rahman posted on Facebook, along with a photo of his co-performers.

The 46-year-old composer, who won two Oscars in 2009 for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, pleased the audience throughout Sunday night`s ceremony with his instrumentals and vocals. He had performed his tracks from the film `127 Hours` at the Oscars last year.

At the 84th Academy Awards, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ composer Hans Zimmer was the show`s musical consultant with Pharell Williams.

The performances at the ceremony included Esperanza Spalding`s rendition of Louis Armstrong`s `What a Wonderful World` as a tribute to the dozens of entertainment industry professionals who died in the last 12 months, including Jane Russell, Whitney Houston, Elizabeth Taylor and Etta James.

There was also an interlude from Cirque du Soleil. The circus gymnasts took on an old-school cinema theme, performing back flips in bell-boy outfits, cocktail dresses and tuxedos.

A suicide car bomb attack on military airport in Afghanistan

A suicide car bomber killed at least nine people in an attack on a military airport in eastern Afghanistan on today, officials said, the latest incident of violence and protests since copies of the Koran were inadvertently burned at a NATO base last week.

There was no official indication the explosion at the gates of Jalalabad airport was linked to other deadly protests and riots, although the Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the attack as "revenge" for the Koran burning.

Anti-Western fury has deepened significantly since the desecration of the Muslim holy book at the main NATO base in Afghanistan.

Twelve people were wounded by the suicide bomb at the airport and casualties appeared to be civilians and Afghan soldiers who were guarding the gate, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Nangarhar province, of which Jalalabad is capital, said the explosion did no damage inside the military airport, which is used by ISAF troops.

Riots have raged across Afghanistan over the past week despite widespread apologies from U.S. leaders, including President Barack Obama and military commanders.

On Sunday, seven U.S. military trainers were wounded when a grenade was thrown at their base in Afghanistan's north.

Chants of "Death to America" have been common at protests and some demonstrators have raised the white Taliban flag.

With few signs of the crisis abating, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan said the United States should resist the urge to pull troops out of Afghanistan ahead of schedule.

"Tensions are running very high here. I think we need to let things calm down, return to a more normal atmosphere, and then get on with business," Ambassador Ryan Crocker told, "State of the Union" in an interview from Kabul.

"This is not the time to decide that we are done here. We have got to redouble our efforts. We've got to create a situation that al Qaeda is not coming back," he said.

Under an international agreement, foreign combat forces are due to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, a process which is already underway.

Bank unions, Trade unions call mega strike on Feb 28

The UPA government is bracing for a mega strike on February 28, backed by trade unions cutting across party lines, in protest against rising prices, disinvestment of profit-making PSUs and violation of labour laws among other reasons. They will be joined by around 8 lakh bank employees who are protesting against reforms and outsourcing of jobs.

Almost all sectors, except railways, are likely to come to a stop on Tuesday.

The strike will be backed by most of the country's trade unions, including 11 central trade unions and 5,000 smaller unions, who refused to negotiate with the government after being called for talks at the last minute.

Interestingly, apart from trade unions affiliated to the Left, trade unions of BJP, Shiv Sena and UPA ally Indian Union Muslim League and even Congress have all come together to hit out at the government. According to senior union leaders, the strike will be near-total in Assam, Kerala, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.

The striking trade unions include the Left labour arms CITU, AITUC, UTUC and AIUTUC, and Congress's INTUC, besides BMS, HMS, TUCI and NLO who have joined forces in support of a 10-point charter of demands.

"This is the biggest formation of trade unions ever," said senior CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta, who also heads the All India Trade Union Council. "Except the railways which has been left out, most industries like banks including RBI, PSUs, transport, telecom, oil companies and mines will come under the purview of the strike and it is going to be unprecedented."

Hitting out at the government, Dasgupta said, "The government knew about our demands and the strike call for long. I have spoken to the prime minister about the situation every time I met him and have raised the issue in Parliament. The labour minister was present at the last labour conference where the issues were spoken about. So, this dubious manner of trying to talk just before the strike does not make sense. We also want to talk but now we will do it only after the strike."

West Bengal may witness clashes as the Mamata Banerjee government is pulling out all stops to ensure that the strike does not succeed. It remains to be seen whether the erstwhile Left bastion is able to pull off a strike on Tuesday. The Congress, which is a coalition partner in Bengal, has supported Banerjee's move, though INTUC is very much part of the formation that has called the strike.

The strikers have opposed privatization and disinvestment of state-run sectors, "unbridled" corruption and price rise, and demanded steps to prevent industrial owners from breaking labour laws, social security for unorganized sector workers, amendment in the minimum wage act and abolition of contract worker system.

In contrast to the Left regime in Bengal, the nine-month-old Trinamool dispensation has already issued a circular barring its staff from taking leave on February 28. Senior ministers have been threatening departmental employees with dire consequences if they join the strike and a series of meetings are being held at the state secretariat to make foolproof arrangements for keeping life normal.

Pakistan may junk Kashmir issue temporarily

The Pakistani establishment, in a bid to carry forward its peace plan on Kashmir in the wake of internal crisis in that country, has invited leaders of both the factions of All-Party Hurriyat Conference to Islamabad for talks to explain its "changed position" on Kashmir. A source close to the Hurriyat said there is a move to shelve the Kashmir issue "for the time being" in the wake of internal political crisis in Pakistan.

Pakistan's high commissioner in New Delhi, Shahid Malik, accompanied by a few other diplomatic staff, drove to hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's winter address in Delhi on Saturday and handed him an invitation letter from foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar. Malik has already invited the chairman of the moderate wing of the Hurriyat, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, along with Shabir Shah and Nayeem Khan, to Pakistan, for talks on its change perception on Kashmir.

Geelani's spokesman Ayaz Akbar said the Pakistani diplomats visited the Hurriyat leader in Delhi and Geelani told Malik that he will speak to his colleagues and let the Pakistan government know about his decision. Incidentally, Geelani has never visited any foreign country accept Saudi Arabia where he went for Haj.

Foreign ministry sources in New Delhi said Geelani will be issued a passport if he applies for it in view of the invitation by the Pakistani government. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who arrived here on Sunday, said he would leave for New Delhi again in a week for another round of talks with Pakistani diplomats at the Pakistani embassy.

Earlier on Saturday, second level Hurriyat leaders including Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan, Molvi Agha Hassan and Shahid-ul-Islam held a round of talks with high commissioner Malik. This was their second meeting in less than a week, Nayeem Khan told, "We had a healthy discussion on the Kashmir issue and our proposed Pakistan visit,'' Khan added.

Shabir Shah, while expressing satisfaction over the outcome of the meeting, said, "The Pakistani leaders reiterated their moral, political and logistical support to the Kashmir cause.'' He said that Pakistani diplomats and politicians said they are eagerly awaiting them in Islamabad for further talks.

Karan Johar snubs Priyanka Chopra?

Shah Rukh Khan’s best friend Karan Johar seems to have taken Priyanka Chopra’s alleged proximity to King Khan a little too seriously.

The filmmaker who is thick friends with SRK’s better half, Gauri Khan is in no mood to sit over a cup of coffee with Priyanka on his talk show.

The latest buzz doing the rounds says that KJo has purposely omitted PC’s name from the list of guests he intends to invite on ‘Koffee with Karan’.

Talking to a daily, a source said, “Karan has prepared a list of all A-league celebs to appear on his show, Koffee With Karan, and has excluded Priyanka.”

Reportedly, Johar was waiting for his latest flick ‘Agneepath’ to hit the screens so that he could then snub Priyanka, his lead actress in 2012’s first blockbuster.

So is PC out of SRK’s camp for good?

The 84th Annual Academy Awards 2012 Red Carpet

Even as fans all across the globe wait with baited breath for the planet’s biggest film awards, the red carpet has opened for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, the most spectacular night in Hollywood.

There has been a change in voting rules for the Oscar this year. The show features nine best-picture nominees for the first time, instead of the 10 they had the last two years.

The ballots are in, the stars are out and show’s favourite ringmaster Billy Crystal, who returns after an eight-year absence, has been defrosted.

Best actor nominees George Clooney and Jean Dujardin hit the Academy Award red carpet Sunday night to the delight of fans in the bleachers outside the Hollywood & Highland Center, but comedian Sacha Baron Cohen threatened to upset the chic Hollywood tone, dressed in an over-the-top white military uniform, sunglasses and a thick beard to promote his upcoming film ‘The Dictator.’

Nevertheless, Cohen stunt couldn`t dampen Dujardin`s hopes. He would like to become the first Frenchman to win best actor and his ‘The Artist’ is favored to become the only silent movie to take the best-picture prize since the first Oscar ceremony 83 years ago.

Christopher Plummer is in line to become the oldest acting winner ever at 82. Meryl Streep might join the acting three-peat club with a third Academy Award.

Along with Streep, Hollywood`s big night on Sunday has plenty of returning stars, too, with past Oscar winners and nominees such as Clooney — who arrived with girlfriend Stacy Keibler dressed like an Oscar statuette — Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams and Nick Nolte in the running again.

At the red carpet, two time Oscar winner Tom Hanks said no one remembers what happens when you win the Oscar. He showed the OSCAR media room and portraits of past winners.

Actress Milla Jovovich was seen in an Elie Saab couture.

Brad Pitt said its much easier for men on red carpet to get ready. George Clooney and I are competitive by nature, glad we both are nominated. Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie looked stunning in black.

Sandra Bullock wearing a Marchesa gown, said she was glad to work with Tom Hanks .

Gwyneth Paltrow in white Tom Ford said she would like to sit with good friend Cameron Diaz. Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera said I am thrilled to be wearing it. She said, "I feared pepelum but I love the shape. I am expecting Billy crystal to do some sing and dance, lavish opening."

Colin Firth said, "I am glad the pressure`s not on me this year as I am presenting award tonight. "

Jean Dujardin said, "I am not a star, I am human. Its more freedom for me. I am not the puppet, I am an artist. After the movie I shed off my moustache. I love shooting in LA, I love the energy."

Michelle Williams wore a Louis Vuitton coral dress, while funnyman Zach Galifianakis said, "I`ve never presented an Oscar. This is my first."

Penelope Cruz was in Armani Prive. She said, "I don`t analyze much on dressing. I know I like. I don`t take time in dressing up. We actors are fortunate to be able to wear these stunning dresses."

Jennifer Lopez said Oscar is Hollywood`s biggest night.

Killing two Indian fishermen: ‘Italian marines to be prosecuted under Indian law'

Holding that the two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast would be prosecuted under the Indian law, Defence Minister A K Antony today said the investigation into the case was progressing in the right direction.

"The case will be preceded under the Indian law. Judiciary in the country is independent," Antony told reporters here.

"The incident of shooting down of two hapless fishermen off the coast of Kollam on February 15 was unfortunate and equally condemnable," he said.

"The investigation in the case was progressing on the right direction and the Kerala government was handling it very strongly and powerfully. The Centre had extended full support to the state's initiative," he said.

The arrested Italian marines -- Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone -- have been charged with murder under Section 302 of IPC.

A Special Investigation Team led by Kochi commissioner, M R Ajith Kumar is probing the case. The victims -- Valentine Jalastine and Ajeesh Binki -- set out to sea in a boat along with nine fishermen from Neendakara fishing harbour.

The two fishermen were allegedly killed by the marines of Italian ship 'Enrica Lexie' when they fired at their boat on February 15.

The Italian authorities have contended that the fishing boat was fired, mistaking it to be a pirate vessel.
