Several girls, brought in from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, to serve liquor at local Kochi hotels, were molested by the New Year revellers.
The manager of a three-star hotel said the bar managers, captains and other staff at several hotels had a tough time protecting the girls from straying hands of the merry-making males in the New Year parties.
"In the beginning they behaved like thorough gentlemen. Some shook hands with us when they arrived and said thanks while we handed over the drinks to them.
But their mood started swinging after a few drinks. Then they started to grab our waist and try to grope us," a girl, hailing from Mumbai, who served liquor at a Kochi hotel, said.
The police said it was also because of the rampaging cyclone Thane that made it difficult for the people to come out and create difficulties for them. But As many as 878 cases were registered in Kochi of which 568 were for drunk driving, wrong parking, honking, etc. Nearly 200 were booked for public drinking and two dozen cases relate to clashes among party-goers.
