UN Report: World lacks enough food as population soars

The world is running out of time to make sure there is enough food, water and energy to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and to avoid sending up to 3 billion people into poverty, a UN report warned on today.

As the world's population looks set to grow to nearly 9 billion by 2040 from 7 billion now, and the number of middle-class consumers increases by 3 billion over the next 20 years, the demand for resources will rise exponentially.

Even by 2030, the world will need at least 50 percent more food, 45 percent more energy and 30 percent more water, according to U.N. estimates, at a time when a changing environment is creating new limits to supply.

And if the world fails to tackle these problems, it risks condemning up to 3 billion people into poverty, the report said.

Efforts towards sustainable development are neither fast enough nor deep enough, as well as suffering from a lack of political will, the United Nations' high-level panel on global sustainability said.

"The current global development model is unsustainable. To achieve sustainability, a transformation of the global economy is required," the report said.

"Tinkering on the margins will not do the job. The current global economic crisis ... offers an opportunity for significant reforms."

Although the number of people living in absolute poverty has been reduced to 27 percent of world population from 46 percent in 1990 and the global economy has grown 75 percent since 1992, improved lifestyles and changing consumer habits have put natural resources under increasing strain.

There are 20 million more undernourished people now than in 2000; 5.2 million hectares of forest are lost per year - an area the size of Costa Rica; 85 percent of all fish stocks are over-exploited or depleted; and carbon dioxide emissions have risen 38 percent between 1990 and 2009, which heightens the risk of sea level rise and more extreme weather.

The panel, which made 56 recommendations for sustainable development to be included in economic policy as quickly as possible, said a "new political economy" was needed.

"Let's use the upcoming Rio+20 summit to kick off this global transition towards a sustainable growth model for the 21st century that the world so badly needs," EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said in response to the report, referring to a U.N. sustainable development summit this June in Brazil.

Among the panel's recommendations, it urged governments to agree on a set of sustainable development goals which would complement the eight Millennium Development Goals to 2015 and create a framework for action after 2015.

They should work with international organizations to create an "evergreen revolution," which would at least double productivity while reducing resource use and avoiding further biodiversity losses, the report said.

Water and marine ecosystems should be managed more efficiently and there should be universal access to affordable sustainable energy by 2030.

To make the economy more sustainable, carbon and natural resource pricing should be established through taxation, regulation or emissions trading schemes by 2020 and fossil fuel subsidies should also be phased out by that time.

National fiscal and credit systems should be reformed to provide long-term incentives for sustainable practices as well as disincentives for unsustainable ones.

Sovereign wealth and public pension funds, as well as development banks and export credit agencies should apply sustainable development criteria to their investment decisions, and governments or stock market watchdogs should revise regulations to encourage their use.

Governments and scientists should also strengthen the relationship between policy and science by regularly examining the science behind environmental thresholds or "tipping points" and the United Nations should consider naming a chief scientific adviser or board to advise the organization, the report said.

CWG scam: Sheila Dikshit blaming Chidambaram in letter to Manmohan Singh?

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had shot off an angry letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh last year over the Commonwealth Games scam. The dated March 28, 2011, in which Ms Dikshit makes an angry defence in the case, slamming the report of the Shunglu Committee which probed alleged irregularities in organising the event.

"Committee report has caused damage to the government and my image," said Ms Dikshit. She also wrote that the "Committee failed to appreciate the need for consultations", and that
"Direct insinuations were deliberate, mischievous and defamatory."

The committee's observations had indicted the Dikshit Government for cost and time overruns in projects related to the Games. It had said that Ms Dikshit had failed in her supervisory role and that she had centralised the procedures which led to delays.

In her letter to Dr Singh, the Delhi chief minister also seems to be blaming the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram for lack of coordination that led to delays in completing the projects and hence, inflating costs.

"Project implementing ministries complained of delays in getting financial clearances," states the letter, written soon after the Shunglu Committee report was made public.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had appointed a committee headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) VK Shunglu on October 25, 2010, soon after the completion of the mega sports event, to probe allegations of corruption, misappropriation of funds, irregularities and weaknesses in management of the Games.

The Commonwealth Games scam has also put Sheila Dikshit's government in the dock with a court in Delhi asking the police earlier this month why it had not filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the chief minister. The court was hearing a complaint filed by RTI activist Vivek Garg, which blames the chief minister for inflating costs and cites several letters written by her to the Prime Minister as evidence.

Delhi Police informed the court on Monday that the complaint had been forwarded to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) since it was investigating cases related to the event. The next hearing is on February 23.

The Commonwealth Games were seeped in controversy and the event made international headlines for poor organisation and project delays. Charges of corruption in the award of contracts and purchase of equipment led to the arrest of CWG Organising Committee head Suresh Kalmadi and his top aides.

Blockbuster film "The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo" to not release in India

Daniel Craig-starrer `The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo` will not be released in India after the Censor Board of Film Certification wanted certain explicit scenes to be blurred.

The Hollywood film`s producers Sony Pictures have reportedly decided not to compromise with the content and have scrapped plans to release the film here.

"The examining committee of the Censor Board, as per guidelines, asked that certain nude scenes in the film be blurred. The producers have the option of appealing once again after the initial decision was given by the Board," CBFC official JP Singh told.

But it seems the producers have already decided to not release the film in India at all.

"The producers haven`t communicated anything to the Board yet so we do not know whether the film is releasing in India or not," Singh added.

Producers Sony Pictures were unavailable for comment. `The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo`, also starring Rooney Mara, is based on the book of the same name by Swedish author Stieg Larsson about a journalist`s search for a missing woman.

The film, directed by David Fincher, released in the UK and US last month and has won five Academy Award nominations.

Team India hoping for turnaround in T20

Their reputation bruised and battered after the humiliating loss in the Test series, India will be desperate to turn their fortunes around and restore some pride in the limited overs matches, starting with the first T20 against Australia on Wednesday.

The Indians slumped to their lowest ebb in the longer version of the last week when Australia mauled the visitors by a 4-0 margin in the Test series.

The drubbing at the hands of Australia was also the current ODI world champion team`s eight straight overseas Test defeat following the series loss by identical margin in England last year.

But with some fresh legs -- Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel, Ravidra Jadeja and Rahul Sharma -- joining the team for the limited overs matches, Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be hoping for lady luck to smile on him in the first of the two T20 matches tomorrow ahead of the tri-series, featuring hosts Australia and Sri Lanka.

With India`s famed batting line-up failing miserably in the Test series, there is a scramble for early berths in opening Twenty20 match at the ANZ Stadium.

There is competition for each spot in the team, especially after the debacle in the Test series.

The opening duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have time and again failed to give India a good start in the Test series.

To add to it, skipper Dhoni himself has looked a pale shadow of his former self with the bat as well as his leadership qualities.

But though there is little threat to their positions in the playing eleven as of now, the trio knows it better that it is high time for them to perform or make away for youngsters like Manoj Tiwary and Parthiv Patel, who are waiting in the wings for their opportunity.

Talented Rohit Sharma is at last expected to get a match after spending the entire Test series on the sidelines. Apart from Rohit, the middle-order will have Raina, Virat Kohli and Dhoni with Ravindra Jadeja will play the role of an all-rounder.

India`s bowling department will be led by Zaheer Khan. He is expected to have Umesh Yadav and Praveen Kumar for company, even as left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan stands with an outside chance because of his batting abilities and experience of playing in Australian conditions.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to spearhead the spin department in Jadeja`s company.

But all said and done, one thing that stands against India is their record in T20 format.

India lost three straight games each in the super league stage of the two consecutive T20 World Cups in England and in West Indies in 2009-10 and young batsmen were exposed big time against the short-pitched deliveries.

The Indians were all out on most occasions, despite having a galaxy of batting stas in their ranks.

But thankfully for the Indians, the present Australia T20 squad, under George Bailey, does not have menacing fast bowlers. There is neither Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus nor Ryan Harris in the team. The only one with some credentials is veteran Brett Lee, who has long retired from Test cricket.

But young James Faulkner is an unknown entity and is said to be a good left-arm fast bowling all-rounder of Tasmania.

till, Daniel Christian is highly spoken of and Clint McKay has had a few impressive performances in the recent Big Bash League (BBL).

Australia`s biggest advantage going into tomorrow`s match is that most of their players can fulfill dual roles.

Out-of-form Shaun Marsh will possibly get one last opportunity to show some spark tomorrow after his repeated faulures in the Test series, which led to his omission from Australia`s ODI yeam.

Shaun`s brother, the big-hitting Mitchell Marsh, is also expected to play tomorrow and will provide Bailey with an all-round option.

The match starts at 2.05 pm, IST.

Will Mayawati's magic work in 2012?

Her rock solid Dalit support may still be intact. But with charges of corruption and poor governance enveloping her, Chief Minister Mayawati may find the going tough in Uttar Pradesh, say political activists and pundits.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is determined to retain power it bagged in the country's most populous state five years ago on its own, stunning foes and friends alike. It will be no bed of roses this time, though.

For starters, there is disenchantment, widely referred to as anti-incumbency. Mayawati and government are battling corruption allegations too. Even admirers say she seems to have withdrawn from the people she claims to represent.

Then there is the opposition factor. The Samajwadi Party is charged up, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is determined to regain the support base it has lost while the Congress wants to make a spectacular comeback.

"She may not win a majority this time," political analyst N Bhaskara Rao said, referring to Mayawati, the four-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

According to him, neglect of the basic "bijli-sadak-pani" (electricity, road, water) issues cast doubts on her ability to win an outright majority from the staggered seven-phase election starting Feb 8.

Rao admits that Mayawati's decision to deny tickets to a third of her legislators and sacking of 16 ministers over corruption charges shows she has strong decision-making capabilities.

But the 2007 magic -- "social engineering" -- has more or less broken down. Compared to five years ago, Brahmins and other upper castes don't seem to be backing her that enthusiastically.

Badri Narayan, an expert on Dalit issues with the Allahabad-based Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Social Sciences, says that Mayawati's popularity was declining.

"Her Dalit vote bank is intact but sections of Muslims, Brahmins and Kurmis are shifting towards the Congress," Narayan said.

In his view, though Mayawati has an image of an iron lady, the distance between her and her party workers has increased over the past five years.

"As a person she is good, understands rural society, and has politically proved herself many times. But her exclusivity is going against her," said Narayan.

After her political baptism in 1977 by BSP founder Kanshiram, school teacher Mayawati had a meteoric rise in the party. She was made his heir in 2001 and became the party chief two years later.

In 1995, Mayawati created history by becoming India's first Dalit woman Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh.

It was a short stint. She returned to power in March 1997 for another brief stint, and again was chief minister May to August 2002. She finally became chief minister on her own right in May 2007.

But even as her ambitions soared, the 2009 Lok Sabha election checkmated her. The BSP won just 19 seats, far below the 40 it hoped to capture. That was in part due to a Congress comeback, thanks to Ranul Gandhi.

Today too, Rahul Gandhi is going hammer and tongs against Mayawati.

Two women lynch murder accused in Ujjain

A family feud spilled out inside the court premises here when two women lynched a murder accused in full public view.

The victim Ramesh Nigam, 72, and his killers are part of the same family. The reason behind the family feud being Ramesh’s alleged role in the murders of his brother Mahesh Nigam and his son, Prakash.

On Monday, Mahesh’s wife, Shivrani, and her daughter-in-law, Seema, wife of Prakash, mercilessly beat up Ramesh. Shivrani’s two other sons also joined the onslaught.

TV visual showed the women first beating the victim with fists and chappals. The rage continued even after Ramesh slumped to the ground as the women were seen kicking him even after he became unconscious.

The victim, a patwari posted in Tarana, had emerged from the courtroom after a hearing in the murder case.

Ramesh was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Symbiosis college cancels Kashmir documentary screening seminar

Under pressure from several right-wing groups, the Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce has cancelled the screening of a documentary which was part of the ‘Voices of Kashmir’ seminar.

In fact, the seminar which was to begin on February 3, has been postponed indefinitely.

BJP’s student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had earlier sent a notice to the institute raising objections against screening the documentary which it called as “separatist”.

An organisation representing displaced Kashmiri Pandits had also raised its voice against the seminar.

ABVP and Panun Kashmir representatives who met the college authorities on Monday and said the proposed screening of the a documentary, ‘Jashn-e-Azadi’, at the seminar projected the militants in the Valley as "heroes" and was critical of the Indian Army.

This was not acceptable, they maintained.

"We submitted a memorandum to the college authorities against offering a platform to anti-national elements at the seminar and they told us that the seminar would be postponed," a spokesman of ABVP said today.

Rohit Bhat, Coordinator of Pune chapter of PK, said that the proposed seminar should be more "inclusive" and project a balanced view of the situation in the militancy-hit state which also includes Jammu and Ladakh regions.

A Symbiosis spokesman said the three-day meet was being postponed. He said the meet was intended to be an "apolitical and academic event" without hurting anybody's sentiments.

The college has not announced new dates for the postponed event.

SRK slaps Director Kunder Farah Khan’s husband

Shah Rukh Khan’s act of slapping and abusing director Shirish Kunder, Farah Khan’s husband, might be due to a “personal or professional crisis” – according to Farah Khan.

“Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way to sort out a problem and it means the person who is hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on. It saddens me to see him doing the same,” said Farah Khan, reacting to the incident.

Speculations run unleashed yet again as to what kind of ‘personal crisis’ can King Khan be going through. Of late, SRK has been incessantly linked with ‘Don 2’ co-star Priyanka Chopra and reports of an alleged affair between the two have been doing the rounds of media and mouths of people.

Shah Rukh and Farah have been good friends for a long time. But their friendship had deteriorated when SRK had refused to act in Kunder’s film, ‘Joker’. And now the fight that took place between Farah’s husband and Shah Rukh might act as the last nail in the coffin for the friendship of the two. The ‘Agneepath’ success party turned a nasty shade when SRK beat up Shirish Kunder, and the latter left the venue with a covered face.

There were numerous rumours about Farah and Kunder willing to file an FIR against Shah Rukh Khan, but from what Kunder has said, he has no intentions of doing the same. In a tweet, the director has said, “Contrary to rumours, we have no intention of filing an FIR or a Police Complaint.”

Also, talking to a leading daily, the director has said that he is yet to receive any apology from Shah Rukh Khan. “I have not got any call from Shah Rukh as of now,” said Shirish.

The entire fiasco that happened at the ‘Agneepath’ success party is due to Kunder’s tweets on ‘Ra.One’ that had offended Shah Rukh a bit too much. After a heated exchange between the two, Shah Rukh resorted to blows and slaps, thereby giving rise to fresh rumours. Farah’s decision to not file an FIR and remarks about the actor going through some sort of ‘personal crisis’ is now the rallying point of new speculations.

For Farah, forget and forgive seems to be the way to act. For Shah Rukh, forgetting Kunder’s tweets about ‘Ra.One’ turned out to be a difficult task. And for now, no FIRs against King Khan. Perhaps it is the calm before the storm, or perhaps the storm has settled down. Wait and watch seems to be the way to act for the rest of us!

The five who led to baby Falak’s misery

The two-year-old baby girl Falak, who was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre here in a battered condition on January 18, continues to battle for her life.

The doctors at AIIMS performed a second life-saving surgery on the baby on Monday but her condition remains critical and the chances of survival continue to be slim.

While the nation, on one hand, is praying for the baby who was gruesomely bitten by humans and her head allegedly smashed against a wall, the police have further intensified their hunt for the people who have contributed to the girl’s misery.

So far, five people have emerged as the key characters suspected to be behind the baby girl’s condition.

The police are hunting for a 28-year-old man called Rajkumar, alias Dilshad, who "adopted" the baby and gave her to a 14-year-old teenaged girl for upkeep, who in turn admitted Falak to AIIMS with severe injuries.

The teenaged girl has admitted to battering the baby in a fit of rage.

According to investigations so far, one Laxmi, a resident of Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, told police that one Munni along with her daughter had come to her house in September last year claiming that her husband has abandoned them.

Laxmi offered her stay in her house and Munni worked as a maid there. Laxmi said Munni disappeared from her house after about 20 days, leaving the child there.

After some days, a neighbour named Manoj approached Laxmi saying that Rajkumar, a taxi driver, was willing to adopt her.

After Laxmi handed over the baby to Rajkumar, he allegedly took the child to his house in Dwarka where he was staying with wife and cousin. His children were in Mumbai with his in-laws.

The question of keeping the child at home led to differences between Rajkumar and his wife, following which the man took the baby to his teenaged girlfriend who was living in another locality.

In mid-January, Rajkumar left for Mumbai to treat his physically-challenged son.

The teenager, who was taking care of the baby, became frustrated as she wasn’t able to take proper care of the child and assaulted her physically.

Though investigators managed to trace Rajkumar to his in-laws' house but he managed to slip out of police net in Mumbai after his friends tipped him off.

Delhi Police have also released a photograph of Rajkumar.

Police also believe Munni is not Falak’s biological mother and could have stolen the baby, possibly from a construction site.

Meanwhile, the baby, Falak is into her 13th day of stay in the hospital and her condition continues to be critical. She had to be put back on ventilator in the wee hours of Monday.

After investigations revealed water accumulation in her brain, doctors were compelled to carry out a surgery on Monday afternoon.

This is the second surgery she has undergone after she was brought to the hospital. The first surgery was conducted for removal of a blood clot in the brain.

ow brain keeps memories alive for decades

An Indian-origin researcher- led team of scientists claims to have found a vital clue as to how long-term memories are formed in brain, which may pave the way for better understanding of diseases like Alzheimer`s.

It`s known that memories in our brains are maintained by connections between neurons called "synapses".

Now, Amitabha Majumdar and colleagues at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research claim to have discovered from a research in fruit flies about how do these synapses stay strong and help keep memories alive for decades.

Their research has revealed that it`s the hardy, self-copying clusters or oligomers of a synapse protein that help in the formation of long-term memory, the `Cell` journal reported in its latest edition.

"Self-sustaining populations of oligomers located at synapses may be the key to the long-term synaptic changes that underlie memory; in fact, our finding hints that oligomers play a wider role in the brain than has been thought," said Kausik Si, one of the team`s members.

In their research, the scientists analysed a Drosophila fruit fly CPEB protein known as Orb2. Like its counterpart in Aplysia, it forms oligomers within neurons.

"We found that these Orb2 oligomers become more numerous in neurons whose synapses are stimulated, and this increase in oligomers happens near synapses," said Majumdar.

The scientists say that the key was to show that the disruption of Orb2 oligomerization on its own impairs Orb2`s function in stabilising memory. They did this by generating an Orb2 mutant that lacks the normal ability to oligomerize yet maintains a near-normal concentration in neurons.

Fruit flies carrying this mutant form of Orb2 lost their ability to form long-term memories, the research found.

"For the first 24 hours after a memory-forming stimulus, the memory was there, but by 48 hours it was gone, whereas in flies with normal Orb2 the memory persisted," Majumdar said, adding that the finding may help understand disease-causing oligomers involved in Alzheimer`s.

Sanjay Dutt not happy with ‘Kancha’ in Agneepath

The blood-curdling, spine-chilling, terrifying bald avatar of Sanjay Dutt, aka ‘Kancha Cheena’, is a character that India can never forget. Perhaps somewhere down the line, mothers would be found scaring their children with the name ‘Kancha’ in order to make them behave properly. Such is the portrayal of sheer villainy that Sanjay Dutt has been able to give life to.

While the country and countrymen are still cringing in fear just at the thought of ‘Kancha Cheena’, and gaping in awe at the actor behind the role, Sanjay Dutt doesn’t seem to be too happy on being referred to as ‘Kancha’. His role in the movie ‘Agneepath’ was perhaps the most commendable one. The act that he put up in the movie shouts out his consummate skills.

However, recently at the success party of ‘Agneepath’, hosted by Hrithik Roshan at his Juhu residence, Sanjay snapped at photographers who had referred to him as ‘Kancha’. At the party, Sanjay had arrived at around 11.30 in the night and when he was leaving at about 2.30am, he was in an inebriated state. The photographers worked themselves into frenzy when they spotted the actor leaving Hrithik’s place.

One of the photographers then present at the spot recalled the incident to a daily, “We wanted him to pose for us, and normally we cheer for actors by referring to them by their screen names.”

Apparently, Sanjay Dutt wasn’t too happy on being called ‘Kancha’, and snapped at the photographers present there. Reason for his shocking behaviour, however, is still puzzling. The befuddled onlookers didn’t know how to react. And we’re still wondering, may be Sanjay Dutt still wants to be referred as ‘Munna Bhai’.

Mahesh Bhatt`s daughter enters B-Town

After Pooja Bhatt, Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt`s second daughter has entered showbiz but not as an actress. She is following in her father`s footsteps by assisting director Vikram Bhatt on ‘Raaz 3’.

"My daughter Shaheen begins her journey as an assistant with Vikram Bhatt who was once my assistant!" the proud father posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Vikram Bhatt has returned to Vishesh Films after 2003 to direct part three of the horror franchise "Raaz", which is being made in 3D.

The movie stars Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandez along with Bipasha Basu, who is also making a comeback to the Bhatt camp after "Raaz" (2002) and "Jism" (2003). The Bhatts had offered her the lead role in "Murder 2", but she had turned it down.

"Reporting live from `Raaz 3` set. Today is the first day of our shooting. Bipasha and Emraan are on the sets. Vikram Bhatt is directing the film. Shagufta Rafique has written `Raaz 3`. It is a brave script which explores the horrors of the human heart," Mahesh Bhatt posted.

Filmfare Awards: Rocking evening, great moments

In an evening of glitz and good cheer, the 57th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 were presented at the newly set up Reliance MediaWorks Studio in the sylvan environs of Film City. The nominations encompassed several films that had attempted to tread a fairly unbeaten path-Rockstar, The Dirty Picture, No One Killed Jessica, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Delhi Belly. As it turned out, Zindagi... cleared the course by winning seven trophies, followed by Rockstar with five and Delhi Belly with four. The Dirty Picture picked up three.

Ranbir Kapoor's and Vidya Balan's bold attempt to break the mould they had been cast in all along and essay roles that had darker shades-he a troubled rock star and she an unapologetic sex bomb-paid off in the form of the Best Actor and Best Actress award for Rockstar and The Dirty Picture. Ranbir's turn got him a rare double whammy with the Critics' Award for Best Actor as well. Expectedly, Rockstar swept up three music awards too-Best Lyrics, Best Singer (Male) and Best Composer for A R Rahman.

The evening began with a musical tribute to Dev Anand, with Javed Ali of Coke Studio doing a version of Dil ka bhanwar, Aise na mujhe tum dekho and Khoya khoya chand. A ponytailed Shaan, accompanied by Leslie Lewis in a ponytail, stepped up with an ode to Shammi Kapoor with Baar baar dekho, Dil deke dekho and Badan pe sitare.

This year, the hosts were a mixed doubles pair of sorts. There was Shah Rukh minus his regular partner Saif, and Ranbir sans co-anchor Imran. Still, each new permutation and combination worked just as brightly. SRK and Ranbir dropped from an aerial harness and collided mid-air as sparks flew literally. SRK ribbed Ranbir, accusing him of overacting and saying that sons of great actors seldom matched up. Ably supported by Karan Johar , Ali Zafar and former Miss India Ankita Shorey, the duo made the audience crack up with their antics.

As always, the event drew an A-list of performers whose flamboyant acts lent glamour to the soiree. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, there was Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, who each enacted a medley of their hit numbers. Having brought their long relationship out of wraps recently, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia, who are to get married on February 3, shortly also put up a spirited pre-nuptial tango that included a song from their forthcoming film Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya.

The hall resounded with applause when the Lifetime Achievement award was given to veteran actress Aruna Irani. Back in 1961, few would have thought that the toothy child star of Ganga Jumna, who so enthusiastically sang Insaaf ki dagar pe, would acquire pride of place in Hindi cinema as a talented actor and dancer. "I have spent 56 years in the industry and I am so happy to know that my work is respected and appreciated," she told TOI. "The charm of this award is very different from that which one gets for one role. It's rather like putting your marks in individual roles aside for the total marks of your career."

Circa 2011, a veritable annus horribilis as far as the arts and media world was concerned, saw the demise of an unusually high number of performers in the film world, from Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Jagjit Singh, Bhupen Hazarika and many others. They were remembered through an AV.

(The 57th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 will be telecast at 8.00 pm on Sunday, February 19 on Sony Entertainment Television)

US Defence Secretary Panetta.: Pakistan knew Osama bin Laden hideout

In a bid to calm tensions with Pakistan, the Pentagon said Washington still believes that Pakistani officials were unaware about Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad.

Last week, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said that he still believed someone in authority in Pakistan knew that Osama bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad.

The Dawn quoted Pentagon Press Secretary George Little as saying that the interview which quoted Panetta as stating his belief was old.

“Secretary Panetta made clear his belief — which other senior US officials have also expressed — that Osama bin Laden had some kind of support network within Pakistan,” Little said.

“The secretary indicated in the same interview that he had seen no evidence that bin Laden was supported by the Pakistani government or that senior Pakistani officials knew he was hiding in the Abbottabad compound. Since the bin Laden operation, Secretary Panetta and his colleagues in the government have been working hard to improve US-Pakistani relations.”

In a TV interview which was to be aired on Sunday, Panetta said, "I personally have always felt that somebody must have had some sense of what was happening at this compound. Don't forget, this compound had 18-foot walls... It was the largest compound in the area.”

"So you would have thought that somebody would have asked the question, 'What the hell's going on there?'," Panetta told.

He, however, added that he has no proof Pakistan knew it was Osama bin Laden.

The US Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden on May 02 in a raid on a compound in Abbottabad and later buried him at sea.

FM Pranab Mukherjee: India won't cut Iran oil imports

India, which imports 12 percent of its oil from Iran, will not scale down its petroleum imports from Tehran despite US and European sanctions against the Islamic republic, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said.

"It is not possible for India to take any decision to reduce the imports from Iran drastically, because among the countries which can provide the requirement of the emerging economies, Iran is an important country amongst them," Mukherjee told.

Speaking at the end of a two-day visit aimed at wooing US investment, Mukherjee yesterday said: "Some other countries, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, the other Gulf countries they also contribute but Iran contributes substantially."

"We (India) imports 110 million tonnes of crude per year. We will not decrease imports from Iran. Iran is an important country for India despite US and European sanctions on Iran," the finance minister said.

India, the world's fourth-largest oil consumer, is Iran's second-biggest oil client after China.

The US and other Western sanctions have been imposed on Iran's economy over Tehran's controversial nuclear programme. US President Barack Obama added to those measures on December 31, last year when he signed into law additional sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and financial sector.

Indian Ambassador to the US Nirupama Rao last week said that India's purchase of oil from Iran has dropped slightly in last two years and is expected to drop further given the difficulties New Delhi might have in making payments through banks due to tough sanctions imposed against Iranian banks.

Rao had said India was in touch with the US Government and closely monitoring the developing situation concerning Iran, when asked about the pressure from the US that India needs to reduce its dependency on Iranian oil.

BJP leader dares Rahul to become PM

With just over a week before polls begin in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today took on Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi. Throwing down the gauntlet at the young Gandhi scion, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad dared him to become the Prime Minister.

"Let Rahul Gandhi become the Prime Minister for once. Two years are left. Let the country also realise the capability he has to run this country and the understanding he possesses of the country's problems," Mr Prasad said.

Taking a dig at the young Congress leader, Mr Prasad further said that in order to become the PM, all that Rahul Gandhi needed to do was to ask Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to step aside.

Mr Prasad's comments come in the wake of a tough four-cornered contest in UP where the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi has emerged as a serious contender to stake claim to power in the state. The 40-year-old leader has aggressively campaigned in the state, often targeting the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party government over issues of corruption and land acquisition. More recently, the Congress' controversial move to carve out a sub-quota for backward Muslims from the existing 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) is being viewed as a political masterstroke given the electoral significance of the community in the state. Muslims constitute a sizeable section of UP's electorate - 18% to be precise. The minority quota move has been vehemently opposed by the BJP which has dubbed it as divisive and has promised to scrap it if voted to power.

Meanwhile, the Congress, scoffing at the BJP's remarks on Rahul Gandhi, said that it was a sign of surrender by the saffron party which had resigned to the reality of the Congress coming back to power.

"They have admitted the reality. After all, they understand that the Congress will come back to power at the Centre in 2014 and in Uttar Pradesh in 2012. They cannot stop or change it, no matter what they say to the nation," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

As both parties engage in a verbal duel over Rahul-as-PM, the man himself has consciously shied away from taking up any position in the government. He, instead, has focussed on strengthening the party at the grassroots level as also re-energising the youth wing. More significantly, he has been assiduously working to revive the Congress' fortunes in Uttar Pradesh - a state which, with its 80 MPs in Lok Sabha, clearly holds the key to power at the Centre. Congress leaders though have, on several occasions, voiced their support for Mr Gandhi to assume a larger role in the working of the government and have openly backed him as the party's choice for the prime minister's post.

Shutdown by Dalit groups in Andhra Pradesh

A day-long shutdown began in Andhra Pradesh Monday on a call given by Dalit groups to protest the recent desecration of statues of B.R. Ambedkar.

Schools, colleges, shops and business establishments remained closed in many districts while protestors blocked roads to stop buses of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

Student organistaions, especially Osmania University student Joint Action Committee has also called for a shutdown to protest the desecration of statues in Amlapuram and other parts of East Godavari district.

Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), left parties, and people's organizations have extended their support for the bandh.

Police in Hyderabad are on high alert after three vehicles were burnt by protestors Sunday night.

A private bus was set afire at Chilkalguda in Secunderabad early Monday. Earlier, a bus of APSRTC was torched in Ramanthapur while a private van was destroyed in Tarnaka.

Police have sealed all the routes around Osmania University in Hyderabad to prevent students from taking out a rally.

Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) and students groups have planned protests in Hyderabad.

Three people were arrested for damaging the Ambedkar statues.

According to the police, the accused resorted to the act in an inebriated condition and ruled out conspiracy by any political or caste group.

Railway Board plans to increase passenger fares

The Railways appears to have firmed up plans to raise passenger fares in AC classes in face of depleting financial resources and little options available to generate funds.

As pressure is mounting on it from various quarters including the Finance Ministry and the Planning Commission to raise fares untouched for last eight years, the Railway Board is understood to be preparing a blue print for a possible fare hike.

The hike could be anywhere between 10 and 12 percent or Rs 35 for every 500 km, highly placed Railway sources said.

With little assistance coming from Finance Ministry and the overall failures on its part to generate internal revenue, Railways have no options but to rationalise fares, they said.

Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi had earlier this month hinted about a possible hike in fares as "there was a case to do so as input cost had risen over the years".

The fare hike could also be linked to fuel prices to offset that additional pressure, sources revealed.

The passenger fare segment is subsidised to the tune of Rs 16,000 crore.

While a fare hike may not be adequate to cover its rising expenses, the national transporter could also explore other avenues which could be in the form of levying surcharges or cess for infrastructure creation in the Rail Budget proposal, they said.

Reports of two high-level committees on safety and modernisation which are likely to be presented shortly, is expected to put additional pressure on railways to find funds for its modernisation plan.

In such an event railways could also seek annual financial assistance which would be over and above the budgetary support, the sources said.

Railways could seek not less than Rs 40,000 crore as budgetary support in the coming budget, up from Rs 20,000 crore which it had got in 2011-12.

A substantial hike in budgetary support is essential for completion of the existing 149 rail projects and meeting its safety upgrading and modernisation goals. As it is, railways could fall short of its freight target of 993 million tons for the current financial year.

The Railways carried 704.81 million tons of freight traffic till last December.

During the recently concluded general manager conferences, railway top brass is understood to have made it clear that curtailing expenditure should be one of the top priorities of each zone so as to improve its operating ratio, which at present is hovering between 95 and 98 percent.

While the existing policy to rope in private investment have yielded little results, railways could unveil a new PPP policy before the budget with a thrust on speedy completion of vital projects.

Assembly elections: Voting underway for tight fight in Punjab, Uttarakhand

Polling began on a dull vote in the Assembly elections in Punjab and Uttarakhand on Monday with around 10% polling recorded in both states till 10 am.

In Punjab, only about 10 percent of around 1.76 crore voters exercised their franchise till 10 am when reports last came in.

The polling remained peaceful in the initial two hours with no reports of violence received, special Chief electoral Officer Usha R Sharma said.

She said the polling is likely to pick up as the day advances.

The fate of 1078 candidates, including two Chief Ministerial aspirants Parkash Singh Badal and Amarinder Singh in fray for 117 Assembly seats, will be sealed today.

The polling is taking place at 19,841 polling stations across 22 districts of Punjab where.

Prominent candidates whose fate would be sealed today include the Chief Minister from his traditional Lambi Assembly seat, his predecessor Amarinder Singh from Patiala city, their sons Sukhbir Singh Badal (Jalalabad) and Raninder Singh (Samana), former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal (Lehra), former Punjab top cop P S Gill (Moga), former Principal Secretary to the chief minister D S Guru (Bhadaur) and former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur (Bholath).

A total of 70972, including 225 paramilitary force personnel have been deployed to conduct the elections.

At least 2627 video cameras and 554 digital cameras have been installed at polling booths. Around 203 polling stations are using live web-casting.

Of the polling stations, 2718 have been identified hyper sensitive and 6379 as sensitive.

Ludhiana East (16), Patiala rural (13) and Jalalabad (14) are the assembly constituencies where maximum number of contestants are in the fray. The least number of contestants are in Attari (4).

Out of the 1,078 candidates in fray 417, including 45 women, are Independents. At the last hustings in 2007, after scrutiny and withdrawal there were a total of 1,055 candidates, including 56 women, in fray.

Low turnout in Uttarakhand

Polling for the Assembly elections in Uttarakhand to elect 70 legislators began a dull note this morning despite a clear sky.

Till 1000 hours, only 10 per cent polling was recorded, said state chief electorate officer [CEO] Radha Raturi. However, the polling was peaceful, she said.

In most of the polling booths, people began queuing up as the day progressed, officials said.

Over 63 lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise in the elections where the ruling BJP is locked in a close fight against Congress.

The elections will also decide the fate of top state leaders including Chief Minister B C Khanduri from Kotdwar, former chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank from Doiwala, the leader of opposition Harak Singh Rawat from Rudraprayag and PCC chief Yashpal Arya from Baajpur seats.

The polling which began at 0800 hrs would end at 1700 hrs in the evening.

A total of 788 candidates are trying their luck with main contenders BJP and Congress contesting all the 70 seats.

Cabinet to decide on future of UID project today

The Cabinet Committee led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will meet on today to take a decision on the continuation of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) project led by Nandan Nilekani.

Today’s meeting comes a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held discussions with senior Cabinet colleagues to resolve the issue amid reports of difference between Home Ministry and Planning Commission over continuation of UIDAI project.

Reports claim that a compromise formula has been reached according to which Nilekani-led Unique ID Authority of India and the Registrar General of India will be carrying out parallel exercises to collect biometric data.

While the UIDAI will do it in 13 states, the Registrar General of India will collect data in coastal areas and areas where UIDAI has no presence. The two bodies will reportedly share some data. The Cabinet Committee will today take a decision on what data the Registrar General must share with the UIDAI.

The Cabinet committee meeting led by PM Singh will take a final call on extension of the UIDAI project, under which national identity cards are issued to entire population.

"I think we have come to an agreement on how both the projects can proceed together without any difficulty... the Cabinet Committee (on UIDAI) was rescheduled and will happen on Friday. We are quite hopeful that we will have a resolution of these issues in that meeting," Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said after the meeting.

Besides Ahluwalia, meeting was attended by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram, UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani and National Security Advisor (NSA) Shivshankar Menon.

At the centre of the controversy is the collection of bio-metric data of all residents.

While the Home Ministry has maintained that the Registrar General of India (RGI) under it has been mandated to collect the data through the NPR, the Nandan Nilekani-led UIDAI has also been authorised to gather the information.

Home Minister P Chidambaram has sought clarity on the status on who will capture bio-metric data - Registrar General India or UIDAI. The Home Ministry feels that the data collected by UIDAI was not secure as it is not verified by a government servant.

The data collection by UIDAI has been done by hired organisations which is a cause of concern for the Home Minister.

Since the UIDAI has already enrolled 170 million residents, the government will have to take a decision on the future of the body.

UIDAI is likely to complete the mandate of enrolling 200 million residents even before the deadline of March 31 this year.

Ahluwalia has thrown his full weight behind the UIDAI saying the project should continue. On concerns over duplication of work and extra burden on exchequer, he had stated that the project is well worth it.

The Planning Commission wants more resources for the authority for continuation of its work.

According to the Home Ministry proposal, chip-based smart cards will be issued to all residents on the basis of the record maintained by the NPR - a digital database under construction.

Movie Review: Hrithik Roshan breathes fire and soul into 'Agneepath'

Very early in his career, Hrithik Roshan had played some intense and brooding characters in movies like ‘Fiza’ and ‘Mission Kashmir’. Although the films were major Box Office failures, Hrithik the actor, was appreciated for taking up such roles so early in his acting career. The actor became a star and slowly got engulfed in glitzy glamorous roles. After almost a decade, Hrithik comes back in the same brooding avatar in this week’s new release, ‘Agneepath’. And oh boy, he is fantastic.

The film, which is a remake of a cult classic starring Big B, has the same story line more or less but director Karan Malhotra introduces some new characters like Rauf Lala(played brilliantly by Rishi Kapoor) and minuses some old ones.

Set in a village called Mandwa, the story soon moves to Mumbai where Vijay Dinannath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) works for Rauf Lala and becomes an important member of his gang. Vijay’s only motive in life is to seek revenge of his father’s death from Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) and reclaim the respect of his native place, which is now Kancha’s kingdom.

When you are making a cult classic, comparisons are inevitable. But Karan Malhotra plays it safe and changes the story to a certain extend to make it a contemporary fresh film. The treatment given to the film is that of a typical masala potboiler which is high on drama, action and emotions. So you have a mother giving birth to a child in the middle of the road, the hero’s sister being assaulted by the villain and hero himself giving long dramatic dialogues in the climax scene. Sounds familiar? Well, let just say that it is flashback 80s hindi cinema.

While Hrithik takes the film firmly on his shoulder, he is supported by the film’s main baddie, Sanjay Dutt as Kancha. Sanjay gives Kancha a whole new character with his bald and almost ugly look and menacing behaviour. Dutt proves that given a good strong character, he can prove his acting prowess. Surprise package of film is definitely Rishi Kapoor. Kapoor who has always been known for his chocolate boy romantic image, takes a three sixty degree turn in this film as Rauf Lala. He is clever, conniving and very convincing.

Priyanka Chopra as Kaali, Hrithik’s love interest has a small role and unfortunately doesn’t have much to do. Hrithik, on the other hand, gives a very humane touch to Vijay’s character who is quite and brooding. Big B as Vijay had lot more punch lines and aggression which Roshan lacks.

The film is shot brilliantly and the village scenes are particularly good. Music by Ajay-Atul is enjoyable and is already at the top of all the music charts. But the film could have been edited as the first half drags and the pace only increases in the second half when Vijay meets his enemy, Kancha.

The film is not the best remake. We have seen better remakes. But ‘Agneepath’ as a film doesn’t fail to entertain. It has its moments and when you have Katrina gyrating to ‘Chikni Chameli’, how can the film be dull!

If you have gotten tired of urbane, realistic films that have been coming out off late and missing the typical commercial potboilers, ‘Agneepath’ is your answer.

Gavaskar critical of Kohli's century celebration

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday disapproved of Virat Kohli swearing at the Australian players after scoring a century in the final Test at Adelaide, terming it as "school kid" temperament.

Kohli had a wild celebration after reaching his century using some choicest of words against the Australian players, which Gavaskar said was unnecessary.

"Not just Virat, some other Indian players also. Instead of smiling after taking a wicket they were snarling. They were taking out something on somebody. If somebody taunted you on the field show it by scoring runs or taking wickets," Gavaskar said.

"Virat and some other youngsters were swearing at the opponents. That is like having a temperament of school kid cricket. They should not do that.

"When a Tendulkar, Dravid or a Laxman score a century they just raise the bat. By swearing or doing something like that brings down the focus," the former captain added.

Gavaskar, however, praised Kohli for the application he showed in his innings of 116 in India's first innings.

"What Virat has shown with his knock was that runs can be scored if you apply yourself. It shows he is a thinking cricketer. He will score lots of runs in future if he continues like that," Gavaskar told.

Gavaskar also applauded wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha for his gritty knock of 35 but said it was too early to say that he could replace captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in Tests.

"His application was very good and (he) took the attack to the Australians. That's important considering that temperament has been a let down among the batsmen and bowlers. He was calm and cool. I think he knew that he wants to make a case for his place in the Test team as a batsman," said Gavaskar.

"When Dhoni comes into the Test team, Saha cannot be selected as a wicket-keeper. Let's not jump the gun and it's too early to say that Saha can replace Dhoni as Test wicket-keeper. Dhoni has done a yeoman service to the country," he added.

Gavaskar also said that India still have a chance to save the Adelaide Test as the pitch was still assisting batsmen.

"There is a very good chance to save the Test. The Indian batsmen can take the lead from Virat and Saha and even Ishant who hung on for a while with Virat. Apply yourself and don't do anything silly.

"Nothing much is happening on the pitch except for odd balls climbing up. I think they will get four-and-a-half or five sessions to bat on and if they bat sensibly they can save the Test," Gavaskar said.

Veteran actress Hema Malini: Dharamji's honour was long due

Veteran actress Hema Malini is elated to learn that her husband Dharmendra will be honoured with a Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award, and says that the honour was long due.

"I am obviously very happy that Dharamji is getting the Padma Bhushan. It was long due and I am glad that the government of India is conferring the title to him," Hema told.

"He has worked with the best of actors, directors and technicians in his career. I doubt any other actor can boast of such extensive and successful career in Bollywood. Dharamji is very shy so he doesn't speak much about himself," she added.

The actress married Bollywood's original 'He Man' in 1980 and the couple has two daughters -- Esha and Ahana.

"I keep telling him that he must act in more films. I feel happy when his work gets appreciated. Such kind of national honour is always appreciated," she said.

Dharmendra, 76, is known for films like "Bandini", "Satyakam", "Sholay", "Chupke Chupke" and "Seeta Aur Geeta". He was recently seen in movies like "Yamla Pagla Deewana" and "Tell Me O Kkhuda".

He has been chosen for the prestigious honour along with actress Shabana Azmi and filmmaker Mira Nair in the art-cinema category.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa drops two Sasikala loyalists from Cabinet

In a Cabinet reshuffle, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has dropped School Education Minister S S Krishnamoorthy and Revenue Minister S P Velumani - both considered to be loyalists of her former confidante Sasikala.

N R Sivapathy has been appointed as the new School Education Minister while K A Sengottaiyan, who earlier held the Information Technology portfolio, has been named the new Revenue minister.

N Subramanian has replaced Mr Sengottaiyan as the Information Technology minister.

This is Jayalalithaa's first Cabinet reshuffle after the expulsion of Sasikala in December last year. In the same month, she had removed M Palanivel and Kaliyaperumal, both relatives of Sasikala, from the primary membership of the party.

Earlier, Sasikala's husband M Natarajan and Jayalalithaa's disowned foster son V N Sudhakaran were also handed the pink slip. The move was seen as an attempt by Jayalalithaa to nip in the bud reported moves by Sasikala's family to dominate the party and influence the AIADMK government.

Sasikala has long served as Jayalalithaa's companion. She is one of the main accused in a case that alleges the Chief Minister misused her office from 1991-1996 to collect assets worth 66 crores that cannot be accounted for.

That case is being tried by a Bangalore court to ensure a fair trial. Jayalalithaa objected to being summoned by that court, but was ordered by the Supreme Court to appear in person to answer questions. Sasikala travelled with her for those hearings in a special plane from Chennai.

Sasikala has, for three decades, been acknowledged as a power centre in the AIADMK because of her proximity to Jayalalithaa. Insiders say that her opinions counted towards the selection of ministers and party candidates.

In 1996, when Jayalalithaa was beleaguered by a slew of corruption charges, she had a brief falling out with Sasikala, who belongs to the strong Thevar community, traditionally AIADMK loyalists.

Ind vs Aus: India 92/2 at tea on Day 4, trail by 407 runs

Chasing a massive 500-run target, India lost Virender Sehwag (62) and Gautam Gambhir (3) in the post-lunch session on Day 4 of the fourth and final Test in Adelaide on today.

Rahul Dravid (19) and Sachin Tendulkar (7) took India to 92/2 at tea as India need 408 runs more to win the match in next four sessions.

Spinner Nathan Lyon took the prize-wicket of dangerous Sehwag to give the hosts a crucial breakthough.

Sehwag led the run chase for India with his typical 62 runs off just 53 balls as he raced to fifty in 36 deliveries. He hit twelve boundaries in his rapid knock before throwing his wicket to a mistimed shot resulting to an easy catch for Ricky Ponting at cover.

Sehwag added 66 runs for the second wicket with veteran Rahul Dravid as they tried to resurrect the Indian run chase after losing Gautam Gambhir (3) early.

India started poorly as they lost opener Gambhir inside five overs. Pacer Ryan Harris struck early in 4.3 overs to dismiss Gambhir cheaply and reduce India to 14/1.

Earlier, Australia declared their second innings soon after the play resume in the post-lunch session and set 500 runs target for India with less than five sessions left in the match.

Ricky Ponting (60) and Brad Haddin (11) took Australia's overall lead to 499 runs when skipper Michael Clarke declare their innings close. Australia scored 167/5 in 46 overs in their second innings of the match after they declared their first essay at 604/7 on Day 2.

Australia lost Clarke (37) and Michael Hussey (15) in quick succession in the morning session of the fourth day of the fourth Test on Friday.

The hosts were 154/5 at lunch in their second innings with an overall lead of 486 runs with Ponting and Haddin at the crease.

Ishant Sharma trapped Hussey to give India second breakthrough. Umpire Dharmasena took his time before giving Hussey, who wasn't happy with the decision, marching orders. Australia lost their fifth wicket at the score of 147.

Ricky Ponting, who added 71 runs for the fourth wicket with Michael Clarke, hit another fine half-century to take Australia's overall lead past 475-run mark. Ponting's 50 came off in 73 balls and included four boundaries.

Seamer Umesh Yadav got rid of Clarke, who scored 43-ball 37 with the help of four boundaries. Australia lost their fourth wicket at the score of 111.

Yadav's full-length delivery got a faint outside edge from Clarke's bat en-route to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha's hands.

Ponting hit two successive boundaries off Ishant Sharma to bring up 500 runs for the series and also take Australia's overall lead past 400-run mark against India. .

Clarke and Ponting resumed Australia's second innings on Day 4 after India conceded a huge first innings lead of 332 runs after the end of third day's play at the Adelaide Oval.

Australia resumed Day 4 at 50/3 in the second innings enjoying an overall lead of 382 runs.

There was some artificial excitement towards the end of third day's play when the home team lost their top-three for just 50 runs, but with an overall lead of 382 and seven wickets standing, Australia were merely stirred, not shaken.

Barring a miracle, it is hard to see this Indian line-up denying Australia a clean sweep of the four-Test series that was lost 10 days ago in Perth.

Virat Kohli provided the only bright moment by cracking his maiden century but India were still faced with a herculean task of preventing a 'whitewash' against Australia in the fourth and final Test.

Kohli stood bravely amidst the ruins with a gritty 116 but most of the other top batsmen surrendered meekly as India folded up for 272 in the first innings, and even though they were 332 runs in arrears of Australia's first innings tally - and therefore liable to follow-on - skipper Michael Clarke decided not to enforce the same.

Credit should also be given to young Wriddhiman Saha (35) who helped Kohli add 114 runs for the sixth wicket which helped the Delhi lad push for his three-figure mark. Kohli's delightful knock contained 11 boundaries and a six over deep mid-wicket off Michael Clarke's bowling.

The second new-ball again did the trick for Australia as India who were 225/5 at one stage lost five wickets for 47 runs in little over 10 overs.

Aussie paceman Peter Siddle charged in on the unresponsive flat Adelaide pitch to take five for 49, denting a few more Indian batting reputations and prolonging Sachin Tendulkar's wait for a 100th international century.

India Inc to Obama: We are creating jobs in US, Europe

With HCL Technologies announcing 10,000 jobs for locals in the US and Europe, India Inc Thursday chose the WEF meet to send a strong message that Indian IT firms are creating and not stealing jobs in troubled western economies.

Also, a message emerged from British Prime Minister David Cameron's advice to the European Union (EU) that instead of being a threat, the emerging economies like India can be of great help to Europe.

Concluding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India by the year-end would be in Europe's interest, he said.

"We need to have a check-list to tackle the euro crisis... There has to be FTAs, bilateral trade agreements and EU trade agreements with countries like India and Singapore, among others by the end of the year," he said.

His plain-speak to Brussels (EU headquarters) comes against delay in trade-opening pact with India.

Barely a day after President Barack Obama hit out against outsourcing, HCL Technologies' Vice Chairman Vineet Nayar made a major announcement here that his company would create 10,000 locals jobs in the US and Europe in the next five years.

"Companies in today's world of globalisation need to create jobs wherever they go. We have taken a pioneering step...", he said.

Wipro chief Azim Premji, known for his frank talk, said the issue of outsourcing is "getting hyped up since elections are coming up... The US has become over-sensitive on jobs".

Chairman of Mahindra Satyam Vineet Nayyar hinted at creating jobs in the western economies from where they get bulk of business. "Indian firms when they go overseas, will have to create jobs there. We will certainly do so," he said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also wanted investment in Europe to create employment.

Obama in his State of Union address had hit out at outsourcing.

"No American company should be able to avoid paying its fair share of taxes by moving jobs and profits overseas. From now on, every multinational company should have to pay a basic minimum tax. And every penny should go towards lowering taxes for companies that choose to stay here and hire here," he had said.

Amid economic uncertainties and rising unemployment in the western world, the focus is on generation of jobs.

On Wednesday, Citigroup chief Vikram Pandit had said that job-creation was the single biggest issue, both in developed and developing markets.

According to him, 400 million new jobs could be needed to be generated in next 10 years.

Indian IT industry, which rakes in about USD 60 billion revenues from overseas markets, depends significantly on outsourcing of business processes of the Western companies.

Painting a pessimistic outlook, the International Labour Organisation earlier this week had said that urgent attention is needed to create 600 million new jobs in the next 10 years.

"Despite strenuous government efforts, the jobs crisis continues unabated, with one in three workers worldwide, or an estimated 1.1 billion people, either unemployed or living in poverty," ILO said.

Delhi: Battered baby girl fights for life

Bitten and battered with severe head injuries, a two-year-old baby who was admitted to a hospital here last week is "showing signs of recovery", doctors said on Thursday.

Falak was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences' (AIIMS) Trauma Centre around 2.15 pm Jan 18 in an unconsciousness state with injury marks all over her body by a 15-year-old girl who claimed to be her mother.

The girl has been sent to a juvenile home, police said.

"The baby has been unconsciousness since the day she was admitted but she is showing signs of recovering," Sumit Sinha, an associate professor of neurosurgery and one of the doctors treating Falak, told a news agency.

"She has a fractured skull and there is blood clotting on the right side of her brain. It appears that either her head was smashed against a wall or she suffered a blow from a heavy object. Her left hand is fractured while there is swelling on her right hand. There are human bite marks all over her face, forehead and right leg," he added.

According to doctors, Falak is on ventilator support and has even suffered a cardiac arrest.

"On Jan 18, when the child was admitted she was in coma. Her surviving chances are very low due to her severe brain injuries. It might take more than a month to drag her out of her unconsciousness. A team of around eight doctors are attending to her," added Sinha.

While admitting the baby, the girl said that she lived along with her 'husband' Rajkumar Gupta in a paying guest accommodation in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi, said Nirmal Thakur, spokesperson of AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma said that the girl was stopped in the hospital Jan 18 after her story seemed suspicious.

"She has been sent to a juvenile home," said Sharma.

A case of kidnapping, abandoning a child below the age of 12 years and causing hurt has been registered against unknown people, Sharma told a news agency.

According to Sharma, the girl had gone missing from her home in Sangam Vihar area of south Delhi last year and her parents had lodged a complaint.

A police officer said the girl had eloped with someone.

The baby was with the girl for the past 20 days, but police are still investigating how she got there.

The girl told police that the child was bruised when she tried to prevent her from running around. The child also slipped in the bathroom later.

"The parents of the child have not been traced yet," Sharma said.

2012 Olympics: More UK politicians join protest against Dow

A day after the row over Dow Chemical's sponsorship of 2012 London Olympics escalated with a commissioner of an ethics watchdog for the mega sporting event resigning over the multinational's links to the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, more politicians in the UK have now joined the protest.

Yesterday, Meredith Alexander said she was stepping down from her unpaid position on the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 (CSL), which monitors sustainability at the Olympics and Paralympics. "I don't want to be party to a defence of Dow Chemicals, the company responsible for one of the worst corporate human rights violations in my generation," she said.

Joining the chorus against Dow now is Opposition Labour Party's Shadow Olympic Minister Tessa Jowell. Jowell has called for a review of Dow's sponsorship decision.

"I have called today for an audit of the steps taken that led the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 to recommend to the London Olympics organisers, the LOCOG, that Dow Chemicals' sponsorship of the wrap was consistent with the high sustainability aims that we set for 2012 (Games). We also need to understand what the role of other Commissioners was in the process which reached that conclusion.

"We need a solution not a row. Dow Chemicals need to understand the seriousness with which people take the continuing situation in Bhopal following the tragic disaster in 1984. I will do everything I can to make sure this issue does not overshadow the Games. There is still time for a solution to be found," Tessa Jowell said in a statement.

Barry Gardiner, another Labour MP who has been spearheading the anti-Dow protests, said "it is time for Indian politicians to take a stand on the issue."

"Investigations need to be made into the Dow tender. But pressure needs to come from India. This is not just a UK campaign, and quite frankly, I want to see Indian politicians now getting involved," he added.

Dow is a major sponsor of both the London Games and the International Olympic Committee, and has stepped in to fund a high-tech "wrap" around the stadium. The London Olympics organisers, LOCOG, said in December that Dow's name would not be on the wrap during the Games or on five 'test' panels either.

India is strongly opposed to the company's involvement with the Games. Dow is now the parent company of Union Carbide, whose pesticide plant leaked gas into Bhopal in 1984, killing thousands of people in the world's worst industrial accident. The company has said all liabilities for the disaster were resolved after Union Carbide settled with the Indian government in 1989 by paying $470 million to the victims.

`Gali Gali...` screening in Anna village raises piracy fears

Though Anna Hazare watched ‘Gali Gali Mein Chor Hai’ with much enthusiasm along with other people in his Ralegan Siddhi village Tuesday evening, it`s said some villagers in the audience might have recorded footage of the film, raising fears of piracy.

The social crusader had a ball watching Akshaye Khanna rough up corrupt politicians and bureaucrats in the film which still has three weeks to go for its release.

Apparently, some of the 3,000 members in the audience were spotted recording the footage during the two-and-a-half uninterrupted screening under a massive tent especially erected in the village.

But director Rumi Jaffery is not worried. "Let them pirate the film, if that`s the price for what we achieved on Tuesday evening. Simply seeing Aana Saab sit next to me to watch the film without an intermission, enjoying my film so much, clapping his hands and chuckling at the satire and seeing his face break into a childlike grin was enough compensation for the damage that might be caused to the film`s commercial prospects."

"There`s no film theatre in Anna Saab`s village. Our entire team of Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran, Mugdha Godse, producer Nitin Manmohan and I drove down from Pune to Anna Saab`s village with full equipment and a CD of the film for screening," he said.

"Yes, piracy of my film is now a very real danger. There were nearly 3,000 people watching the film in that tent with Anna Saab. Anyone could have copied the film on a camera. But we`re ready to tackle the risks. At least we did something that no filmmaker has done in our country. We actually showed our anti-corruption film to the crusader against corruption."

Apparently, Hazare had not seen any film for the last 40 years. He was clueless about the identity of the actors.

Says Rumi, "He didn`t know any of us. He just knew we had made a film against corruption. We went to great lengths to get him to agree to see our film. Our team was in Anna Saab`s village for nearly a week making arrangements for the screening. But the effort was worth it."

S-band deal: Ex-ISRO chief barred from govt jobs

In a damning action, government has barred former ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair and three eminent space scientists from any re-employment for their alleged role in the controversial allocation of scarce S-band space segment to private firm Devas.

The action, probably the first of its kind against a former Secretary-level technocrat and other retired officials, follows a high-level inquiry into the controversial deal under which Antrix was to lease out bulk transponders on two satellites to Devas for launch of digital multimedia services.

68-year-old Nair, the architect of India's maiden moon mission Chandrayaan-I, hit back at the government accusing it of "witch-hunting" and threatened to move court seeking relief.

He also attacked the incumbent ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan saying that he had misled the government on the issue. The order by the Department of Space mandates that Nair and three other top officials "shall be excluded from re-employment, committee roles or any other important role under the government."

"These four former officers shall be divested of any current assignment/consultancy with the government with immediate effect," said the order dated January 13. Nair was the Chairman of three entities -- ISRO, Space Commission and Antrix Corporation, and Secretary, Department of Space. The other three officials against whom action has been taken are A Bhaskaranarayana, former scientific secretary at ISRO, K R Sridharamurthi, former managing director of Antrix, ISRO's commercial arm, and K N Shankara, former director of the ISRO Satellite Centre.

Minister of State in the PMO V Narayanasamy said the decision to crack the whip was taken by the Prime Minister's Office which considered the report of a high-level panel on the deal and recommendations on it by a team led by former CVC Pratyush Sinha.

Nair, a Padma Vibhushan awardee, said the government action was "in violation of principles of natural justice and tarnishing the image of reputed people like him."

With this order, the continuance of Nair as Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT-Patna, has come under a cloud.

Bhaskaranarayana said he had done no wrong and felt offended by the government action. He said the Antrix-Devas deal was done with all due diligence and care.

Sridharamurthi also said that he had done nothing wrong and probably "we will have to go through the process of defending ourselves. We will do that."

"We are always ready to defend our actions. Lot of things are not clearly seen," he said.

Soon after reports of a scam in the deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh constituted a high-level committee under former cabinet secretary B K Chaturvedi to go into the allegations.

The Cabinet Committee on Security had cancelled the deal in February last year after these reports.

An angry Nair blamed his successor Radhakrishnan for the action, accusing him of being behind the move and pursuing a "personal agenda" by misleading the Government.

Dismissing his charge, Narayanasamy said Radhakrishnan had nothing to do with him.

"Why is he blaming Radhakrishnan? The action was taken on the basis of the findings of two Committees," he said.

Asked to comment on the matter, former President A P J Abdul Kalam said there was no infighting. At the same time, he said that definitely, the establishment was bigger than any individual.

Under the deal, Antrix was to provide 70 MHz of the scarce S-Band space segment to Devas for its digital multimedia services. This was to be done by leasing 90 per cent of the transponders in satellites GSAT-6 and GSAT-6A that are proposed to be launched by ISRO. Devas, in turn, was to pay Antrix a total of USD 300 million over 12 years.
