DMK’s day-long fast begins on dam issue

DMK leaders are observing a day-long fast on Monday to draw the Centre’s attention towards the vexed Mullaperiyar Dam issue and also assert the state’s rights.

Party General Secretary K. Anbazhagan kicked off the protest at DMK headquarters “Anna Arivalayam” here in which many party cadres participated.

Similar fast was being held in other parts of the state.

A human chain in five districts receiving water from the dam is scheduled on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu and Kerala are locked in a row over the dam, with the latter wanting to dismantle the existing structure on safety grounds and construct a new one.

Tamil Nadu is stiffly opposed to it, saying the dam was safe.
